First I make the skin in solid colors, and then I shade using 4 other colors. These colors are normally a very dark version of the original for inside the arms and such, a normal dark color that will be seen on the outside of the skin, an inbetween color, and a brighter color for highlights. As for how I decide where to shade, I don't know how to explain. I just kind of do :P One very important part of shading you should do is hue shifting. It makes everything look nicer. :)
