This is my entry for the Fairy Tale Skin Contest. I chose the Snow Queen because that fairy tale isn’t very well known.
True, Frozen was somewhat based off of it, but the only thing that’s similar is the fact that there is a queen involved with snow.

☆The Story☆
(Keep in mind this is only an adaptation/summary of the tale, there are many versions, and they are all somewhat different.)

Once upon a time, there lived a little boy named Kay and a little girl named Gerda. They were neighbors, and loved each other like siblings. Their houses were so close they could reach through the windows and shake each other’s hands. They hopped to each other’s roofs and had a rooftop garden.

At night, they would open their windows and listen to stories told by Kay’s grandmother.

“There once was a demon who took delight in bringing misery to the world.” Kay’s grandmother said. “He created a mirror that reflected everything as much worse than it was. Even the most pleasant meadow would become a dirty wasteland in the mirror.

“The demon had become very popular for making the mirror. One day, the demons decided to take the mirror to heaven. On the way up, the mirror laughed so hard with excitement that it burst into thousands of pieces before they were close to heaven’s gates.

“The shards fell back to Earth in small pieces that were hardly visible to the eye. The glass landed in the eyes and hearts of innocent people, cursing them to see and feel only the worst in the world.”

“Grandmother, why would you tell us a story like that?” Kay asked.

“So the next time you feel sad or can only focus on the bad in the world, you remember to check for a shard of glass in your eyes or heart,” his grandmother explained.

After she kissed her grandson on the forehead, she went to shut the window and noticed a layer of frost on the window. “Looks like winter is coming, that or the Snow Queen has visited.”

“Who’s the Snow Queen?” Gerda asked.

“Who’s the Snow Queen?” The grandmother asked playfully. “Haven’t you ever wondered why children aren’t allowed to play in the snow for too long?”

The children asked together, “Why?”

“Because the Snow Queen will get you!” She made gestures like a horrible monster. “She’s a weather witch and drives a sled through the clouds that’s pulled by polar bears! She sends blizzards to attack her victims! And when children stay out in the cold by themselves, she snatches them up!”

“That’s so scary!” Kay exclaimed.

“It’s supposed to be scary,” his grandmother said. “If It were a happy story, you wouldn’t learn anything. Now, you both get some rest. I’ll see you in the morning.”

Winter was near, and Kay and Gerda were excited to build snowmen and go sledding. Kay looked up, hoping to see the first sight of snow fall from the sky. As fate would have it, a shard of glass from the demon’s mirror landed in Kay’s eye.

Gerda asked him what was wrong, but all he could do was be grumpy and list what was wrong about winter. He never wanted to see her; Gerda thought she had done something wrong and was very upset.

One day, Kay wandered into the woods alone. Nightfall came, and he found himself lost in the cold. He laid down on a sled and fell asleep.

He woke to discover his sled was being pulled along by a sleigh along along a river, the water freezing as it went. The woman driving the sleigh turned and looked at him. She was tall, with white skin and blue lips. She had a large crown and a coat of white fur. Kay knew he was looking at the Snow Queen.

The Snow Queen lifted Kay onto her sleigh, and covered him in her coat.

Kay protested that his friends and family would miss him, but the Snow Queen kissed him on the cheek, and the cold became more bearable. She kissed him again, and he forgot everything.

The town thought Kay was dead, but Gerda did not. She decided to continue to search for him alone. She thought he could have lost his sleep crossing the river, so she found a boat and tried to row across. But, the current was too strong for her small arm to row against the current, and the boat was sent downstream.

She arrived at the most strange place. There was a sunny clearing full of colorful flowers and chirping birds. There was a small cottage in the center of the clearing, and an old lady answered the door. She explained that the Snow Queen was real and she was her sister.

The summer witch kissed Gerda’s cheek, and Gerda forgot all about her home and her family. She kissed her again, and Gerda felt only happiness and warmth in her heart.

After quite some time, Gerda discovered a rose bush exactly like the one on her and Kay’s rooftop garden. Suddenly, all her memories came rushing back. She remembered her family, and how desperately she wanted to find Kay.

The summer witch had underestimated how much the little girl loved the little boy, for only true love could break a witch’s spell.

Gerda ran away from the summer and back into the winter. She sadly found no sign of Kay or of his kidnapping, but she did find a crow.

The crow was injured by a thorn in his wing, and couldn’t fly. Gerda kneeled down and removed the thorn from the wing of the poor bird.

“Thank you, my lady,” squawked the crow.

“Please, Mr. Crow, have you seen a lost boy in the woods?” Gerda asked.

“Indeed,” the crow said. “I saw him not to long ago dragging a sled through these parts. But, I’m afraid he was taken by the Snow Queen.”

The little girl burst into tears. She might never see Kay again.

“Don’t cry, little girl,” said the crow. “Not all is lost. I can take you to the Snow Queen’s palace.”

Gerda followed the crow for miles and miles, until finally, on top of a frozen lake, she discovered a large palace of ice. That was as far as the crow could take her, so he wished her luck, and she thanked him for his help.

Gerda crossed the frozen lake and krept past the sleeping polar bears gaurding the entrance to the palace. She checked all the rooms for Kay, and finally found him in a large room with the Snow Queen herself. The little girl quietly spied on them from the doorway.

“Please, Your Majesty, let me go home,” Kay said. “I don’t want to spend the rest my life in this cold and dark place.”

“If you don’t wish to spend eternity with me, then you must spell eternity with these ice cubes,” the Snow Queen said.

She threw a handful of ice cubes on the floor and left the throne room. Kay tried to spell the word, but there were far too few to do so. It seemed he would be with the Snow Queen forever, and even without a shard of glass in his eye, it seemed like a miserable future.

While the Snow Queen was gone, Gerda ran to Kay and wrapped her arms around him.

“Kay, I’ve missed you so much!” she exclaimed.

“Well, I haven’t missed you!” Kay snapped. “I don’t know why you won’t leave me alone!”

He struggled to free himself from her embrace, but she just held him tighter. Tears of joy rolled down her face and over the boy’s chest, warming his heart and melting the Snow Queen’s spell. Color returned to Kay’s face and he began to cry, his tears carrying away the shard of glass.

Kay had returned to his normal self. He and Gerda danced with joy, crushing the cubes on the floor.

Much later, when the Snow Queen came to check on the boy, she didn’t find a single soul in the room. What she found was the word eternity spelled out on the floor.

By the time the children arrived home, winter had melted into slipping. They entered Kay’s house to find his grandmother sitting in a chair by the fire.

“We’ve been worried sick!” Kay’s grandmother exclaimed. “Where in heaven have you been?”

Gerda and Kay shared a smile.

“Grandmother, we have a story for you!”
