This is my entry for the Sci-Fi Contest. I feel that it's a bit more subtle than some of the other entries, but I really just made it for fun. Thanks!
Backstory
Hundreds of years after Earth and it's native humans discovered faster-than-light travel, they were caused much consternation by the Vaegir Empire.
The Vaegir are an offshoot of humanity, functionally indistinguishable apart from the marks on their necks and the small pupils in their eyes. The Empire is primarily the Vaegir's merchant coalition, and a highly lucrative one at that. Vaegir are generally intelligent, shrewd, diplomatic, and apathetic towards any race that isn't their own, especially if it's the humans, who abandoned them to their current planet of Poseidon XIX many decades ago. The symbol of the Vaegir Empire is an artistic rendition of Poseidon XIX from space; a darkened planet with a bright left crescent indicating the primary Vaegir city, Prosperous. Prosperous can be seen from space and goes from the south pole of Poseidon XIX to the north, in a thin strip along the planet's surface. The rest of the planet is barely inhabitable, as it was repeatedly hit with nuclear weapons by the human's when they found the indigenous inhabitants to be numerous and hostile. The young Vaegir race was showing to be infected with a sort of sickness, one that they only carried and did not suffer from, though it was extremely dangerous to humans, thus ensuring their exile to the planet.
Interestingly enough, the Vaegir survived through wit and a curious resistance to radiation poisoning, forming their own civilization over time.
Now they believe they are a superior evolution to humans, who they still hold their initial banishing against. They can be quite a threat, due to their quick tongues and minds, and absolute hate of humanity in general.
