Fjarst í eilífðar útsæ
vakir eylendan þín.
That poem is translated to:
That poem is translated to:
Far in the eternal yonder sea
your island wakes.
That is a short poem written by an Icelandic Poet nearly 200 years ago and, you guessed it, it's about Iceland.
This is my submission to the second round of Panya's contest. My country of choice was Iceland.
Why this skin relates to Iceland:
Red is the fire produced by the island's 140+ volcanoes, white recalls the ice and snow that covers iceland, and blue is for mountains in the distance.
The viking hat is there because Vikings inhabited the country in the late 9th century.
Blue eyes is the most common color in Iceland.
Dark red hair is one of the most common colors in Iceland.
Elf ears because the majority of Icelanders believe in elves (believe it or not, they have an elf school).
The vine around the right leg because of the country's beautiful weather and surroundings. Iceland is home to the youngest place on Earth. Surtsey Island, in the Westman Islands, came up from the ocean floor during a volcanic eruption in 1963.
The partial / small rainbow on the left leg represents Iceland's support to the gay community. Iceland is very progressive in gay and lesbian matters. In 1996, legislation was passed to create registered partnerships for same-sex couples and in 2006 same-sex couples were granted the same rights as different-sex couples in adoption, parenting and assisted insemination treatment.
Icelandic National Day (Þjóðhátíðardagurinn (eep have fun trying to say that)) is an annual holiday in Iceland which commemorates the foundation of The Republic of Iceland on June 17th, 1944 and its independence from Danish rule. The women and young girls wear dresses similar to the ones the skin is wearing for tradition.
