What it is:

Minecraft's Programmer Art, although great in its own right, has largely been left to gather dust following 1.14's changes to the art style — Mojang only updating its compatibility with later versions of the game and nothing more. As a result, there remain prominent issues such as dispairity between blocks and items both new and old, like Netherrack & Nylium, when using the built-in Programmer Art resource pack.

Halcyon+ [16x] is a pack meant as a compromise between both styles of Vanilla (aka Jappa) and Programmer Art, offering a classic and nostalgic experience for those like me who've stuck with the game for the past decade, while introducing the objectively much-needed changes in color palette for many blocks and items for newer users to enjoy, and remains faithful and friendly to the core identity of Minecraft as a whole. Many issues are addressed and more, and all provided to you courtesy of many months and weeks of hard work and dedication by yours truly.

This is the closest we can get to what Minecraft's texture update should have been.

What it isn't:

While many resource packs rely upon built-in assets and textures in order to function, Halcyon+ [16x] is divorced from standard Programmer Art, meaning it can and should be used without ever having to toggle Programmer Art on, alongside your choice of supplmentary packs for things such as weapons, armor, HUD, etc. This is meant as a replacement, but naturally translating the textures is not 100% accurate, so expect some slight cosmetic differences to a number of items and blocks if only for clarity's sake.

Most but not all textures were changed; some remain their modern variations post-1.14, and a few creative liberties were taken. This resource pack is 100% complete as far as I'm concerned. However, my methods are not entirely accurate, so feel free to discuss any potential changes or fixes below should you have any suggestions.

What's included:

  • All variants of wood planks, logs, and doors
  • All pre-1.14 stones & cobble
  • All Ores including Nether Ores
  • All pre-1.14 bricks and variants
  • All Quartz and variants
  • All Prismarine and variants
  • All Netherrack, Soul Sand, Glowstone
  • Almost all flowers & plants
  • All saplings
  • Oak, Spruce, and Jungle leaves
  • All Glass (Stained & Regular)
  • Almost all items
  • Entities such as Slimes, Creepers, Boats & Beds, Piglins, Sheep, and more
  • Connected Texture support via OptiFine or Continuity (highly recommended)

7/20/22 — Minor update: general polish & error fixes : by Jesha 07/20/2022 5:23:30 amJul 20th

Hello once again, friends. This is just a minor update fixing a bunch of mistakes and adding a few more textures omitted from the July 4th update earlier this month. The largest changes include the addition of proper Programmer Oak & Iron doors, tweaks to color counts on various textures for accuracy, and a couple more additions for consistency's sake. All in all, this is likely going to be the final update for 2022 barring disaster, so hopefully these changes take smoothly for many of you.

Have a wonderful day and stay safe.

I didn't know netherrack and the other stoneish textuers were based on the classic-est stone! That's a fun tidbit.

You see this a lot in older games where they reuse sprites in order to save on development costs or time, so I imagine Notch (who was not very artistically inclined) simply didn't want to throw away good textures if it meant he could reuse them.
As far as I know, the cobblestone texture is ubiquitous in 4-5 textures but there could be more that I'm not aware of. Even the Beta 1.7 revision is based on it to some degree.

I always had it in my mind that it was based on the revised one for some reason. Oh well! Thanks for the info. =]

It's a silly assumption I convinced myself due to how old netherrack is, but one I had nonetheless.

You'd think so, but if you strip away a lot of the detailing you can easily tell the template used was the old RubyDung variant of cobblestone -- easier to tell on Halcyon with the limited color palette I used. :)

This is largely why I love doing this kind of thing as a hobby, it's interesting to see the methods used in making the style of the game while simultaneously archiving the past and preserving it for the future to use and understand. Minecraft wasn't always this clean, family friendly sort of game, it was rustic and daring -- scary at times even. Made it such an interesting game to attach to when we were younger during the height of horror and creepypastas on the internet.

nicceee youre back im putting together a server that makes vanilla minecraft better and makes mobs harder ill probably use your texturepack as the official but could you improve the grass block a little bit it kinda "sticks out"' the block itself doesnt but the pixels in the block do high contrast same with tall grasses I like the pattern redesign of it tho

I could re-valuate the grass and see if there's room for improvement, sure
