This resource is a complete setup for 2-player checkers or chess in Minecraft.

I started by customizing models for all of the pieces, then made more for the game board, and then more for some awesome ornate architectural elements. I ended up with a great resource pack, as well as a couple of simple but elegant maps where two players (and some spectators) can have an epic chess or checkers match - each player even has their own 'entrance area' and could totally rock-in to some entrance music.

The download .zip file contains everything you need:
•The resource pack that modifies all of the blocks/models/etc.
•Schematic files of just the assembled chessboard & checkerboard, with and without pieces
•A fully-ready 'baroque quartz' opera house-themed PVP arena, with a spectator area - one for chess and one for checkers

The attached photos do a good job of showing off the additions. Very little was changed in comparison with many resource packs on the whole, but here's more detail:

•Glowstone, Sea Lantern, and Jack o'Lantern have been replaced with a white, black, and red block (respectively) that serve as game board tiles; this is advantageous, as the board is always fully illuminated this way
-These blocks have also been used architecturally in the PVP arenas, as they look nice and keep the place lit

•The carpets have been used to represent the pieces - this is also advantageous, because carpets don't interfere with light.
-For Give commands and the like, the order of the 16 pieces compared to the 16 carpet types is:
-Pieces: (white)-K,Q,R,B,N,P; (black)-K,Q,R,B,N,P; (red)-Checker,CheckerKing; (black)-Checker, CheckerKing
-Colors: Standard Minecraft color order (white, orange, magenta, light blue, yellow, lime, pink, gray, light gray, cyan, purple, blue, brown, green, red, black)

•The board corners and edges have also been given custom models, with Purpur Stairs being used as the edge block and End Portal Frame being used as the corner.

•The ornate opera house-style arenas have been given some enhancements:
-Hopper -> Carpeted Quartz Stairs (Left)
-Furnace -> Carpeted Quartz Stairs (Middle)
-Anvil -> Carpeted Quartz Stairs (Right)
-Brick Stairs -> Carpeted Quartz (Left)
-Red Sandstone Stairs -> Carpeted Quartz (Middle)
-Nether Brick Stairs -> Carpeted Quartz (Right)
-Tripwire Hook -> Chair
-Cake -> Quartz Finial
-Dispenser -> Quartz Bannister
-These blocks were chosen in particular for their directionality, as well as the lack of full opacity for many; keep in mind that that these blocks retain their placement rules, so if you break something in the PVP Arenas, it can be a little weird to get used to fixing it

Also, the floor opens onto delicious voidiness - be careful. In reality, I'd recommend flying (as a player on the ground level) anyway, as the view a couple blocks up is just perfect when deciding on your move.

A last note - to "move" the pieces, you'll have to destroy them and place them again on their new tile (another good reason to stay in creative). Just remember that they replaced carpets - the king may look a full block tall, but it's really only a carpet's thickness, and you're probably targeting a further-away block if you're not targeting the pieces at their base.
