Just stepped through code and I don't see how this is happening.
There's only two cases where notifications are marked as read.
1) When you open notifications via clicking the upper right notifications icon.
2) When you view the /account/notifications/ page BUT that method gets notification data, marks as read in database THEN passes the "stale" unread notifications data to render for display.
Will try to reproduce on live when I get notifications before looking further into.

Notifications are marked as read when visiting the account/notifications page.
- Refreshing the account notifications page will show new notifications with a green flare as well.
- However, opening the home page and then using the URL bar to directly navigate to the notification page will show all notifications as read.
Sometimes I like to navigate directly to the page, so that I can see all notifications (since the notifications dropdown combines similar notifications).
