Vanilla shaders! No Optifine required, just install with your ressource packs.
In the latest snapshots, since the game updated its rendering engine to OpenGL 3.2, we have temporary access to the rendering processes of the game and can do stuff like this!

Addtions & Tweaks:
  • SDR bloom and slightly more vivid lighting
As blocks are lit under sunlight or near light sources, they're a bit brighter and more saturated than before. The outdoors looks a bit more colorful and outdoorsy.
  • Adaptive brightness
Blocks and mobs in very dark areas are slightly lit up when nearby (< 10 blocks away). This is a pretty common practice in games; it helps players navigate in pitch black areas without squinting too hard.
  • Atmospheric density
The horizon is blue and colorful, rather than just foggy! Sunsets are particularly gorgeous. Works in the Nether and the End as well, and adapts to render distance. It really looks at its best the further away you can see.

Notice: This is an experimental ressource pack that uses vanilla shaders to mess around with how to game renders and colors the world. As such, it only works in the latest snapshots and will probably need updating every week or so. In other words, it probably won't work in a few snapshots or in the full release of 1.17! Use it while you still can ;-)

This ressource doesn't change any textures and doesn't make much impact to performance, but I recommend you only try it for fun! This is all very "new frontier" stuff for creators.

I've found a bug. Looks like the first-person arm and capes are 100% brightness. You might want to look into that.

Dark areas looks like it just has the screen gamma turned up and not actually brighter, it is only more white. Id recommend allowing to disable the adaptive brightness feature as straight up turning up the gamma to 2 to 3 in options.txt is a lot more natural. The fog should also be a bit less blue or less dense for players with low render distance

Maybe making the 3 features into individual packs would help? So you can have the features you like and not the ones you’re unsure about?

This is really cool!

I do have one minor complaint though. I tried breaking stone in a cave with the pack on, and the block breaking particles were very dark. If I’m not the only one with this issue, would you be able to look into a fix for this?

Oh that's interesting, okay. I can look at that. There's probably a shader file that I modified that regulates the block breaking animation. There might be a few more small bugs like this (there's no wiki yet, so I have to expermient to see what does what).

I've fixed it
It is an easy fix, I just merged the Adaptive Brightness function with the particle.fsh shader, like this

Alright solved this issue (and a few others) in an upcoming patch. Last thing I want to try to do before posting the update is to see if it's possible to make water look a bit better, too, by maybe blurring what's below the surface. Thanks for the help!
