I don't think a stiaght port is possible given all the new 'things' that have since been added, but restoring some of the 'feel' seems like it should be possible (for someone who knows modding)…
[I'd rate the large biome size (particularly ocean) and the lack of biome abutment control (snow or jungle next to desert or similar) as the major factors.]
