In early 2024, the nascent Imperium shifted the focus of its massive industrial complex towards the construction of a huge navy with the aim of protecting its interests abroad. Indeed, the Imperium had established peaceful trade relations with the Impero Dalzzurri and Rochefort Republic, relying on the two powers’ powerful navies for protection. However, as both Dalzzurri and Rochefort faced difficulties protecting their own interests, it became clear the Imperium would need to protect itself with its own navy and demonstrate its power and presence on the world stage. To achieve this, Herculean efforts were undertaken to expand local infrastructure, with monetary contribution notably provided by many charities.
The first capital ship project, named for a goddess revered in Imperium culture, showed how much the nascent power had borrowed from the naval schools of Rochefort and Dalzzurri; the project for a heavily armored battleship was discarded in favor of a fast, more moderately armored battlecruiser with better optimization for long term, long distance operations. A battlecruiser was also considered a more suitable power projection tool and better met the requirements of the navy. As the Imperium was expecting to fight in commerce warfare, the need for large cruisers was clear.
As with many other powers, the Liorium Imperial Battleship Arakan served more or less as a template for what a modern capital ship’s characteristics should roughly be. The Imperium approached Rochefort yards to obtain modern boilers and suitable weaponnery; a quad and twin variant of the modern HST Mk4 were provided and later mass produced in Imperium factories. The new ship was to mount three quadruple turrets along the centerline in a standard AB-X layout. Twin turrets linked to the same fire control device were installed in wing turrets with tall double-ended copper barbette towers housing two turrets each. The design for these unique mounts later inspired the Rochefort battlecruiser Subjugator, which was developed simultaneously. In return, Subjugator’s armor scheme was mostly carried over to the new imperial battlecruiser, even though Subjugator was less than half the displacement of the new imperial battlewagons. Still, unlike Subjugator, the Imperium design had the machinery outside of the citadel, located aft.
To protect imperial commerce, four ships were planned; the first was named Aqua after the aforementioned goddess and gave her name to the class. The next three were named Fürst Bismarck, Mackensen and Admiral Tirpitz. Entering service in early 2024, the massive Battlecruisers immediately impressed the world with its grand size and fine lines, along with its extremely heavy weaponnery and advanced equipment. The massive battlecruiser caused many foreign powers to look with concern at how fast the Imperium was closing the gap with other major powers. Despite the massive cost of the project, the Imperium’s gamble had succeeded; immediately taken seriously as an aspiring major power, the Imperium secured an alliance with its long term trade allies, Rochefort and Dalzzurri, creating what would eventually become the Angle.
