COMBAT MECH SUIT - SAGITTARIUS

“This baby has enough firepower to destroy military grade ships. Make sure your targets are identified both using IFF and visually before engaging”

-Captain Adams, CMS instructor

Design

Developed from the CMS-Pillar, The Sagittarius was made during the early days of the League. At the time where there was a high demand on ship designs, the Sagittarius was originally designed as a Naval missile defense system. However, as the League’s technology improved, such needs for defense system was no longer required. Instead of scrapping the concept, the engineers re-purposed the Sagittarius as an attack platform. The nickname “walking naval gun” eventually became its unofficial nickname. Compared to its predecessor, the Pillar, the new successor is significantly larger, about twice the size. However, the amount of firepower the Sagittarius packs a very big punch which makes up for its very large profile. With weight issues being more significant, the amount of armor planned to be equipped on the new CMS was reduced by about 20-30%. The main purpose of the Sagittarius is long-ranged support – with a firepower equivalent to those of a naval gun. This meant that instead of calling in ships, a much smaller (compared to ships) vehicle can be sent to reduce risks during operations. However, should the need of an Assault vehicle, the Sagittarius can be equipped it’s shaved off 30% to give additional survivability when launching assaults.

Although having a relatively good armor and firepower, the Sagittarius’ biggest flaw is it’s rather expose cockpit. There have been reports where the pilots themselves were shot in the cockpit, easily rendering the suit un-operational. The lack of close-range defense systems is also taken in account, even though the suit is not meant to operate solo. Furthermore, the reduced 30% rather makes the center mass of the Mech rather weak, as its joints and actuators are not as well armored like its legs.

In terms of its leg, the Sagittarius has a rather well built legs as it is able to carry the burden of its rather heavy weight. It is also well armored, which is accompanied by slat armor and is also resistant to regular anti-tank mines.

Depending on the operations, the Sagittarius is commonly found behind the frontlines as a support unit, coordinating with FO (Forward Observers) and has a built-in slave unit which enables TDL (Tactical Data Link)
Cockpit

The Sagittarius’ cockpit is rather “empty” as most of the instruments are mounted on the operator’s HUD (Heads Up Display) system. This in turn allows each pilots to personalize (League designation “customize”) their cockpits to their desires. Personalization differ from each operators, but the most common are cockpit lights, small weapon racks, mini refrigerators, monitors, gaming consoles etc. The cockpit hatch is fond behind the operator’s seat, which allows ejecting simpler, compared to the old ejecting system.
Weapons

This Mech suit was named “Sagittarius” for its outstanding accuracy, even at extreme ranges (beyond visual range in some cases). It is armed with a duo of weapon pods which can be armed by a number of weapon systems ranging from missiles to cannons to experimental weapons such as lasers. These interior of these pods are modular, which allows weapons easier repairs, replacements, and generally the longevity of the Mech during extensive battles. The pods are equipped with slat armor on the side to give additional armor against enemy fire. Additionally, weapon doors can be added in front of the pod to protect the weapons. This is especially beneficially if the Mech is armed with missiles, rockets, Railguns or any weapon systems/ammo which may detonate inside the Mech when taking a direct hit. By default however, the Sagittarius is equipped with a double Mk. 9 Semi-active “Apollo” rockets. These rockets are rather accurate at long ranges and has a good overall firepower.

These weapons are modularly connected to a more advanced FCS (Fire Control System) which allows for easy weapon handling compared to the old Combat Mech Suits. The FCS by default allows any weapon to be fired in a burst of 4-5 shots or on full auto. The operator should take into consideration that some weapon systems are not meant to be fired automatically. To prevent accidents, the FCS can be modified so that single fire can be used, rather than bursts or auto.
Notable Battles

“The siege of Arthur” – Before the Invasion of Arthur, the League had sent a small scouting force on the surface to survey the area. A squad of CMS-Sagittarius was deployed in this scouting force. However, said scouting force was ambushed by the enemy. The Sagittarius was tasked to destroy enemy gun emplacements which have zeroed in on the League’s forces. The area surrounding the gun emplacements and the guns themselves were decimated after one salvo. The Arthurians feared the firepower of the Sagittarius causing them to regroup and retreat, which made the Invasion landings saw no resistance.

“The assault on Minerva Peninsula” – League forces stationed in Minerva was heavily outnumbered and outgunned when the X’alorians invaded the fringe planet. With the evacuation proceeding rather slowly and the fact that the planet will eventually fall within the matter of hours. Reinforcing the planet was considered futile as the closest fleet did not have enough firepower and the number to go up against the invasion force. As such the League had no choice but to hold off the X’alorians long enough until everyone was off planet. With lacking heavy support, the League relied on the few CMS-Sagittarius they had.

A couple Sagittarius were hidden beneath the water to ambush the X’alorian ships landing in the Minerva Peninsula, exposing their arms when targeting enemy ships in the bottom where their armor is the weakest. Although there are no official numbers, it was estimated that 24 ships were downed in a matter of minutes with only 2 Sagittarius’ before they were taken out by a SWARM of torpedoes
Export Variant

The League eventually made the Sagittarius available for export. These variants however lacked the Mk. 9 Apollo rockets, and were replaced by the old Mk. 1 Artillery Railgun System (MARS-1). Empty weapon pods are also available for export
