wolfs have clothing and I don't want my doggy to freeze
The armor is repairable, (but apparently not enchantable) which still limits its utility (although not as much).
I never considered the dog barding as much more than a decorative addition, and (with that low bar) is is 'worth it'.
About the only meaningful use I can see for it is in helpingto keep the dogs in dog kill skeleton/wither skeleton farms alive; for thi spurpose it works fine and creating an minor armildillo scute farm 'next door' largely solves the limited capacity of teh barding issue.
