OK so I got minecraft today, i install it all, it finishes, it loads up....
I start a game. When it loads (didn't show the loading terrain bar btw) I fell through the sky for about 3 minutes before world was there.
Once in the game, everything is running fast and fine, things are generating etc...
However, when i break a block nothing drops
I also walk through mobs which dont move and can't be hit.
What is happening and how the hell do i fix this?

Normally when you first start it up chunks take a while to load and you may need to restart your minecraft a few times. Like Pyro said, you're on creative. Blocks drop nothing and you can walk through hostile/friendly mobs. You can also create anything you want in creative by clicking E (if you don't know, just a friendly tip).
EDIT;; For the "not reacting when hitting" thing, that means you're lagging and need to let it load up a bit.

Lol it appears you have started the game in CREATIVE GAMEMODE,
Once you create a new world below where it asks you for the world name it should say GAMEMODE: survival/adventure/creative you want to click on survival

That means the world is still loading, and your computer is lagging. Give it time.
