S.M.S. Vulkan was a catamaran shaped U-Boat salvage tug in the German Imperial Navy from 1908 to 1919.
With her max. speed of 12 knots, Vulkan was able to follow the submarines of that time.
It took part in many U-Boat rescues during World War 1.
After World War 1, the ship, together with the bigger salvage tug S.M.S. Cyclop, was surrendered to the british forces.
On her way to britain, the Vulkan sank during a storm.
SMS Vulkan was a role model for other ships built by Russian and Japanese forces. (For example the Russian salvage ship "Kommuna", which exists to this day)
