A History Of Minecraft, By SoggyTractor

Have you ever wondered how Minecraft came into the world...and how it grew up?

Markus Persson was born 1 June, 1979. He lived in Denmark before moving to Sweden with his parents and going to school there. He started programming at the age of seven, using his dado s Commodore 128.

In May 2009 (or earlier) Markus (AKA o Notcho ) got the idea for Minecraft after playing a game called o Infiniminero . He liked the idea of building, but found Infiniminer extremely limited. So he worked on a similar version and was determined to make it better, temporarily naming it o Cave Gameo .

On the 13th, under a channel called o Nizzotocho , he posted a 3-minute video of the o Cave Gameo on YouTube. He said that o This is a very early test...It will have more resource management and materials, if I ever get around to finishing ito ¦o Today the video has over 3 million views, with 8,000 likes and 3,000 dislikes.

It was named Minecraft: Order of the Stone on the 14th, and then just Minecraft later on. Classic became available on 17 May, but with very basic settings. The game received mention on IndieGames.com on the 18th. Pre-orders for the game started being accepted on 13 June, 2009.

Notch finished working on Creative Single Player, having included a new level generator, bedrock, fluids and clouds. A o Survival Testo was released on 1 September, when players could try out the new survival mode. Zombies, spiders and creepers appeared for the first time.

o Indevo and o Infdevo (the second and third phase of Minecrafto s development) were released in December 2009 and February 2010, bringing crafting, 3D clouds, terrain generation and bigger maps.

Notch left a company called o Jalbumo in order to focus on Minecraft full-time from June. Minecraft Alpha was released 28 June 2010, bringing multiplayer and also the o Secret Friday Updateo , with, surprisingly, secret updates every Friday. This lasted until 18 September.

In September, a huge spike in sales resulted in the Minecraft web server crashing as too many people were trying to download the game. When this issued was fixed, Notch started to work on the o Halloween updateo , which on 31 October, brought out Ghasts, Zombie Pigs, pumpkins, nether rack, soul sand and new biomes.

The long-awaited Minecraft Beta version finally arrived on December 20th, bringing the new launcher and the logo we all know and love today, as well as new features such as The End, enchanting, potions and animal breeding, along with a 50% price increase. The o Adventure Updateo followed in June 2011, bringing new villages and Nether fortresses.

However it was the first o Minecono on 18 November 2011 (in Las Vegas) that promoted the release of the full game. Minecraft 1.0 was released on the same day and the game was technically o finishedo . Notch was quoted saying: o I realized that a game that simple yet that dynamic had a lot of potential to turn into a really great game, and kept coming up with things I wanted to change and stuff I wanted to add.o

By the end of 2011 Minecraft: Pocket Edition was available on the App Store and Google Play. It has generally remained at the top of the app charts ever since.

May 2012 saw the release of Minecraft on Xbox 360. In the same month, SoggyTractor got bored of studying for his exams and started playing the game that all his friends had been chatting about. At the time, PC sales were at 4 million.

Over 11 million people have bought the PC version of Minecraft today. (July 2013, in case you were unaware.) The game has been enriched by the o Pretty Scary Updateo , the o Redstone Updateo and the o Horse Updateo . Despite the huge success of the game and the numerous awards it has won, people are starting to criticise the increasing complexity of the game, expressing a desire to return to o simpler timeso .

But this is only the beginning. By 2020, will Minecraft have erased RuneScape and World Of Warcraft from the face of the earth? Will it be the most important game in popular culture, the biggest thing since sliced bread? Who knows. But I believe that Minecraft can only get better and in a few years, weo ll look back upon these early times and laugh at how unbelievably simple and old-fashioned it was in 2013.
