Oi, everyone! It's me, Ocean, and I'm back with another Blog post! Today's topic is on something I've found to be quite disturbing in our society nowadays.

Today's topic: Are Scary Games Still "Scary" Like They Used to Be?

Now, I know what's going through those heads of yours. "Ocean, of course they are! Just look at how scary Five Nights At Freddy's (a.k.a. FNAF) is!" Now, I won't lie that when I first saw a video of FNAF, I almost messed myself. But now, it's just one of those things that I look at and say, "Egh, can there BE any more hype over this?" So, I pose the question "Are scary games still as scary?"

The first reason why I feel why scary games aren't scary anymore is because of the quality of games nowadays. Just look at how many games have been done for creepypastas. Slender, Jeff the Killer, heck, even Sonic.exe (which is honestly one of the worst ones I've read); they all have their video game counterparts. Now granted, these games were prety freaky when they first came out. Now, thanks to the (sometimes) wonderful invention of YouTube, they've become nothing more than washrags. Overused, overdone, and not even scary (unless your washrag has grown legs...then you need be concerned). YouTubers like PewDiePie, Markiplier, and many others have made the scary game industry a joke, to be quite honest, and while they do make it comedic, it loses that "Wow, I really want to see how scary this game really is!" vibe that you should get from a game such as FNAF or Slender. It makes it unoriginal, and people eventually get bored of it.

Another reason why I feel that they aren't scary anymore is because that's all video games are now: blood all over the place and bland, dry story. First off, blood shouldn't be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a scary game. I mean, half of the scary games today don't even have a real story to them, they're just like, "Hey, let's add tons of blood and gore into our game to make it scary!" How about you don't, and come up with something original, like an interesting backstory that you go into more depth with as the game progresses? *cough* Portal/Portal 2 *cough* I'd like to see more games with less blood and gore to make themselves scary, to be honest.

The third and final reason why I feel they're not scary anymore is overusage of jumpscares. I mean, really, you play a "scary" noise and then put a screamer on the screen? While it gets you the first time; the other times it just gets plain annoying and overdone. If done correctly, however, jumpscares can make a scary game even more scary than it already is. Of course, games like FNAF take it too far. You have a giant animitronic chicken (a chicken, of all things) screaming at you while text that reads "IT'S ME" flashes on the screen. That doesn't seem scary at all, considering how overdone the entire franchise is now. Slender, however, did a very good job with the jumpscares, as you weren't expecting the white-faced man to appear after the static on the camera had gone out, causing you to fear him even more.

I agree. Most "Horror" games are not made well these days. All it is is alot of blood, everywhere, or just jumpscares.

without the knowledge of it's popularity among youtubers, FNAF is creepy with jumpscares and keeps you on the edge before passing a night. It's just the massive fanbase that ruined the whole creepyness of the game. This goes for the new evergrowing group of creepypasta fans. This new fanbase ruined the creep factor of original creepypasta stories with happy fan art and terrible games.

and also... Why is Friday Nights at Freddy's so popular in the minecraft community?

I'm no expert on scary games, but I'll give my two cents.
I think a game based on jumpscares is dumb. I've never seen this FNaF, but I've heard it's just jumpscares. Slender was nice, but not really what I want in a Horror Game.
My favourite Horror games of all time are the older Silent Hills (Because I haven't played the newer ones) and Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. God, DCotE is a frikkin masterpiece. I mean, Innsmouth was always scary, even before the monsters showed up or anything happened. It always had that creepy air.
A good Horror game does not use cheap tricks to scare you, it builds up the mood, makes you think something can pop out of anywhere, and you're always on your toes, wondering whether it's worth it to cross the dark, narrow pathway to get more batteries for your flashlight.

FNaF is not just jumpscares. It can be really (at least to me)  atmospheric. You are always on edge, watching them through your cameras. Also when it jumpscares, it can be really well timed later on. But just my opinion. :)

Video games will always be video games regardless of the genre (or how badly or well the game is made), the only thing that really changes is how the person views the content as they age or gain more experience.

Point's is, indie horror is a trendy thing which started pretty much with Slender and since that, the Slender horror formula has been copied tons of times by smaller lil' games that justify bad quality with jumpscares.
When searching for Horror Games these days it's best to look into older classics and into AAA games.
I'd recommend playing games like "Alien Isolation", "Dead Space", "Outlast", which all scare you with atmosphere and constant panic instead of silly jumpscares.

Alien Isolation isn't a classic silly goose, it just came out about two months ago!

That's why I said "into older classics and into AAA games."
