Let's just agree to disagree, alright?

Hi. As you might already know, my name is Reese Boyden. And I love books. A lot. It's getting bad. Help, I'm buried underneath piles of novels!
Well, I don't love every book I've ever read. In fact, I've got quite a few controversial opinions about books and authors everyone seems to love!
So let's get into this.

1. "Hocus Pocus - The All-New Sequel" by A.W. Jantha: Oh, did I hate this book. I bought it, and I regret it; it was so laughably bad. The plot made less sense than the movie, which I adore. The plot goes as follows: Poppy Dennison brings back the Sanderson sisters and sends her family to Hell. Her crush turns into a dog. Oh, there's a comedic character that serves no purpose. Oh, diversity points! Oh, look, so many tropes including "popular girl and protagonist's crush/friend used to be best friends" "oh, the obvious crush actually has a crush on the protagonist" "the comedic character is annoying"! And a plot twist is so confusing and stupid. I can't spoil it, but don't read it. It's dumb.

2. "Six of Crows" by Leigh Bardugo: Ah, this is where I get the hate. I hated this book. It was so slow, boring, and there were way too many characters and point of views to keep track of. Bardugo is on my list of "won't read again" authors.

3. "Bag of Bones" by Stephen King: Another author that's in my "won't read again" list of authors. I labored through half of this book before I put it down and sighed, muttering to myself about how boring the plot was. I understood none of it, and this was the second novel by Stephen King I have read in 2018. I don't remember anything from the first one, just that I hated King's writing style and his plots. Thing is, I love creepy stories. I was hoping to be scared by both of the novels, and I was completely disappointed. Thanks for overhyping King, mom.

4. "The Cruel Prince" by Holly Black: Now, I loved the Spiderwick Chronicles, they'll always have a special place in my heart. And this book was... okay. I don't get the hype surrounding it, I thought it was nothing more than a generic fantasy novel. I might read "The Wicked King," but I'm not entirely sure. Points for Vivienne being best girl, though!

5. "The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue" by Mackenzi Lee: Wait, one of my top 5 favorite books from 2018 I had an issue with? Yep! That comes in with Felicity. I just thought she was really, really annoying. I definitely won't be reading the sequel.

6. "Carry On" and "Fangirl" by Rainbow Rowell: Everyone seems to hate these books. While "Fangirl" wasn't the very best, it was alright. I'm not exactly sure why people don't like this author, but I quite liked the novels.

7. "A Court of Frost and Starlight" by Sarah J. Maas: Everyone hates it, and it was... okayish. Shrek the Halls of the ACOTAR series.

8. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling: boring. just, very, very, boring. don't @ me, i know. these books are loved but i just can't.

9. Cassandra Clare: I'm not even going to start about how much I disliked this author's writing.

10. John Green: It feels like his novels are just copies of each other.

Stephen King reminds me a lot of JJ Abrams. Both are good at setting up a captivating premise, but fail to deliver on it with a satisfying conclusion. Some of King's best works simply fall apart at the end with dead end plot points and little to no closure. The only exception would probably be the finale to the Dark Tower series, but there are so many inane moments on the way there that it's harder to appreciate.

The only ones I'd even heard of were Spiderwick Chronicles and Harry Potter. I haven't read Spiderwick though, but I have 'read' (I listened to the audio version) half of Harry Potter, I liked harry Potter. But I'm not so sure now, as it was one of the first books I 'read', so my taste wasn't refined yet, might read it again to see how it holds up now.

It's aged okay, I just found it to be extremely boring. Others might enjoy it, though!

Is Six of crows that bad? I read the original Shadow and Bone series awhile ago and I remember being alright with it. Not in my top 10 books but its not like I stopped halfway. Caught the Matched series

I haven’t read the new one by Maas but I always believed it would end as a trilogy and tbh it wrapped up v nicely?? The last book felt too rushed imo but it did come to a conclusion that I was alright with, although that bit at the end with Rhys was kinda predictable. I’m just kinda eh that Maas is trying to stretch out the series like TOG idk man I’m just oofed on it

sadly I haven’t read any of the other books I mentioned even Harry Potter hmmm but I’ll take ur word for it

I have a series I’d recommend if you’d like, it’s my favorite and I feel like you’d enjoy it (ie there’s a walking talking fire throwing sarcastic skeleton who doubles as a detective)

A lot of people love Six of Crows, but I can't get behind it. You don't have to take my word for it, these are all just my opinion and I don't expect everyone to take my opinion as law c:

ACOTAR was good just as a trilogy, I agree. I would've been happy with it as just that. And wasn't Rhys always predictable, haha!

yes i would love to read a walking talking fire throwing sarcastic skeleton who doubles as a detective because that sounds amazing
