Frank Lampard has underlined that while Saturday's performance in the 2-1 loss to Italy had its positives, England can't settle for anything less than three points against Uruguay on Thursday.

The Three Lions midfielder spoke to the Telegraph's Henry Winter ahead of the clash, which sees Roy Hodgson's men face a Uruguay team currently bottom of Group D after losing 3-1 to Costa Rica in their opener.

The loser of this matchup can count their World Cup hopes as good as over, giving both outfits a desperate cause to ensure they fight for their lives in Sao Paulo.

Key Players To Watch

Uruguay: Luis Suarez

According to Sky Sports, Luis Suarez says he is 100 percent fit to feature against England on Thursday, giving the Three Lions a worst-case scenario of sorts:

However, Oscar Tabarez has not yet revealed whether he intends to start the Liverpool forward against England, leaving some air of doubt as to what impact Suarez will be able to have.

That being said, Suarez will, of course, be the man of the moment, burdened with reversing his nation's fortunes. He was voted the footballer of the year in England over the past 12 months but now must bite the hand that feeds him.

Diego Forlan looks like the most logical player to give way should Suarez be added to the line-up, and when the Liverpool man is at his most sparkling, there are seldom bigger talents who can draw a greater share of the attention. Just as Suarez may hold the key to Uruguay's hopes of advancing, Wayne Rooney can bear a similar responsibility for Hodgson's side, provided he's fielded in his optimal position.

According to Matt Hughes of The Times, the Manchester United marvel will indeed be brought in from the cold of the left wing into his favoured central hub behind Daniel Sturridge:

Though Rooney was less effective from the flank against Italy, he did still manage to set Sturridge up for the Three Lions' initial equaliser, so England fans can only dream of what the forward is capable of when in his most natural spot.

Best-case scenario, Rooney inspires England to victory. Worst-case outcome, he flops once again and limits the involvement of Raheem Sterling in the process.

There's no certainty that Tabarez will stick with the same line-up or formation against England after such a disappointment last time out, but Walter Gargano may be needed to quell the threat of Hodgson's more creative midfield weapons.

And it's among that number that Steven Gerrard sits, although his puppeteer-like brand of orchestration wasn't allowed to reach its crescendo against the Azzurri.

Sky Football's Matthew Stanger sees the Liverpool captain as invaluable to the England team after enjoying such a fine campaign at Anfield:

Most of the buildup this past week has been in relation to who will line up in the attacking positions for these two teams, but a forward is nothing without his midfield and this is one head-to-head that's likely to dictate a sizeable portion of the possession and chance distribution.
