Introduction

Hello guys, it's me, Sam, bringing you another blog. I am here today to show you how to make your server successful. Have you ever had that feeling when you feel like creating a big minecraft server but never success, don't fear, here is the guide to solve all of your problems. So, let's crack this open, shall we?

Guide

Hosting

So, you probably came here to make your server popular. Well the first step to creating your successful server is by getting a host. This is serious. If you don't have a good host you are in trouble as your players will experince lag and other issues such as crashing. You should also not host your server from your home-computer as this often doesn't get you as long as you may have wanted to come.

It is easy to find a great host. The few things you should look at are prices, hardware and support. These are three things that are main. There are also a few smaller things you gonna want to look at, such as control panel, FTP Client and changing your player slots. Though this is not so useful, it might become more useful later when you make your server.

You should think about it. Do you want a smaller server with less people, or a big server with more people? If you want a smaller server, you shouldn't buy that much RAM as it isn't needed. 2-4 GBs should easily do the trick. Adjust your playerslots so it fits to your Gigabytes. You do not want 100 players on 1GB.

Spawn setup

Now that you have a good host with reasonable amount of RAM, you should be able to hold your server alive on that point. You might think; "Oh good, I have my server, build a small quickly built spawn and put it on PMC". no, it just doesn't work like that. The trick is to have a proffessional spawn with all info needed for your players. Rules, staff and quick tips is a must on every server. Examples:

Bad spawn:

undefined

Good spawn:

The last one is alot more detailed which makes the journey a whole lot funnier. Although, as you make your spawn, do not make it too big as it might confuse your players where to go.

Plugins

You are gonna have to decide what kind of server you want, factions, survival, Survival games, eh, who cares, you are either way gonna need a good permissions system including some good plugins.

Basic ones which are used by many servers are listed below.

PermissionsEx / GroupManager - These are two permission plugins. They allow you to manage what players are allowed to do. You can even create groups with them, moderator group, admin group and so on. A permissions plugin is a must for your server.

Essentials - You might have heard about essentials. It is the top used plugin according to mcstats at the moment of writing this. This basically gives your server a whole lot of new commands such as /fly, /heal, /list, /tpa and many more. You do not need essentials but it very helpful.

Announcer - Any announcer in specific will do the trick. This will announe anything specified in a config.

WorldEdit & WorldGuard - These two plugins are made for each other, and made from the same developer. You can basically make regions and set blocks and do alot of terrain terraforming and more with WorldeEdit. You use worldguard to create regions which you protect which is used for alot of spawn protections. You can also set flags so mobs won't spawn and much more.

Vault - Economy and permissions API. Other plugins hook into vault to use economy. Much needed.

Votifier & some listener - Votifier lets your players vote. To setup votifier, give it a simple search on youtube or google. You will also need any Listener (I recommend GAListener for good customizablility) which listens for a vote and gives players items and/or triggers a command when voting.

These are just some basic plugins which will pretty much fit on every server whether it'd be a factions one, survival one or any other.

Make sure to configure every plugin to your needs until you are happy.

Adminship

You will need good staff for your server. I cannot say this enough, but choose wisely. This is a big mistake many server owners do. They approve wrong staff which aren't even experinced with Minecraft. This is a big mistake. To recruit your staff, create a reasonable application format and post it on PMC forums. You will later have a website where people who join can apply. Again, choose wisely.

Website

A website is also one of the keys to success. You will need a website for advertising all news and recruiting staff. I would suggest enjin, found here. It has some high customizable stuff including setting up website tags and donator ranks. give it a search on google "How to use enjin" to get a good result of tutorials showing you how to setup a good and nice-looking website.

Donation ranks

If you are using enjin for your website, use DonationCraft store as it allows for much custom things. When creating your donation ranks, you should still think of minecraft EULA, where it clearly says that you are not allowed to give any players advantage over any other. This means that you are not allowed to give any player who donates a kit where a non-donator gets nothing. You are allowed to sell cosmetic things like Nicknames, Player tags and more which doesn't affect the gameplay features for one player over another.

Advertising

You are pretty much all setup now and there are only a few things left to do. Firstly, you have to advertise, pick great sites such as;

PlanetMinecraft
Minestatus
Minecraft-index
minecraftservers.org

These are just some of the more famous ones and there are alot more of them. Make sure to bump your server whenever possible to get as many players as possible. When you get donations, upgrade server hardware and just keep going like that.

Troubleshooting

It just isn't working for you, eh? Let me see if I can help you. There are a few problems your server might have encouraged.

1. Your server is not good enough.
2. People can see that your server will not last for long
3. Your ranks are not good enough
4. There are hackers and abusers all around your server exploiting glitches. Fix these :P

This was pretty much everything I had for now. Thanks for reading. Maybe drop a diamond if you liked, leave a favorite if you loved and subscribe if you want to see more.

Sincerely,

Sam

No matter how many times you say that you aren't advertising, it still is advertising. Instead, I would recommend telling someone HOW to search for a good server/web host.

It felt lazy, and also broke a rule when you mentioned AND linked them.
