Step 1- Notes
When you make your server know about it. Make sure you read up on how to Make a server, install plugins, edit config files etc. Search up on google how to do everything. Don't make or buy a server not knowing about it. That only causes confusion and wasting people's time. Buying a server also is a big deal. It is going to costs Money each month for them to host it. I use DevilDogsHosting , they are a good hosting company. They are a little pricy buy you get Mcmyadmin and TCmyadmin with it + a very good support team.
Step 2- Plugins
Plugins are probably the most important part or close to the most important thing about your server. Plugins is a mod in simpler words to modify the game. When you make or buy your server make sure you install and edit a number of plugins so that your server is unique. Always have a twist or fun activities to keep players on and busy. Unless it's a vanilla don't let it be bland. Then people get bored and they leave. On my server for example I have factions, mcMMO, but soon I'm getting Jobs, Mob Arena, PVP arena, N Spleef, and many more plugins to keep players busy and having fun. With just factions and mcMMO, It can get boring on my server but I do other things to keep them on, which will be explained in another step. Step 3- Permissions
Permissions are again one of the most important part of your server. Permissions are the commands your players have. I currently use group manager. Group Manager is a simple plugin to manage your groups and there perms and prefixes. Prefix is the rank you see before a players name on the chat in a server. Each Group can have a prefix if you choose a color and its own commands. The basic Groups Would be- Guest, Member, Donator, Moderator, Admin, Owner. Each group must have its own commands. To give them a command you must know the permission node to that command. If you have essentials a simple permission node would be this: essentials.ban This Node would be for a moderator so that they have the permission to Ban a player that broke a rule. There are many other plugins to handle permissions such as the following- Permissions, PermissionsEX(PEX), and there are many others on the bukkit plugins list. I am switching to this for my server in a couple weeks once it resets. It supports multi color prefix and a lot more stuff. If you ever need a permission node for a certain plugin just type in [pluginname] Permission nodes. So say i wanted essentials permission nodes I would type on google, "Essentials permission nodes" That is the basics for permissions.
Step 4- Staff
Staff is important, it is the people you trust to take care of your server when you are not on. They are basically the police of your server. Staff is complicated to pick. You must watch them in the game to make sure they have these things-
You must be able to trust your staff. The ranks I use for my server is from lowest to highest-
**Important** Never give your close friends OP or a staff rank right off the bat. I did this and then they think they can break rules and do whatever they want because they know you. Make Them EARN it like everyone else. Make them feel lucky to be apart of your server.
Step 5- Builds/Spawn
Spawn is very important because it shows your dedication to building and to the server. You must have a specific theme to your spawn or else it will look bad, different builds together=NO. The theme of my spawn is a skyscraper city. I have the empire state building as my main attraction. Then I still have many Builds to work on. Many themes are- Medievil, Modern, small town, Abandoned, Futuristic, Chinese town. Come up with some yourself too! Be creative. Shops are very important too. Use Chestshop. ChestShop is a plugin that allows players to buy and sell stuff to each other or create a adminshop for the administrators of a server to sell stuff. Remember though, make your spawn unique. Have a shop and many other attractions. To build easier I recommend getting World Edit. World Edit is a plugin that allows you to instantly build structures with the use of a tool/wand. That is all for Builds/Spawn.

Advertising is how you get people on. You can advertise on the Minecraft Forums, Minestatus, Minecraftservers.net, and many more places but my personal favorite is PlanetMinecraft. PlanetMinecraft offers a great community to post servers, Skins, Builds, Mods, texture packs, and what I am Doing now A Blog. On PlanetMinecraft Have quality in your server post. Make sure the description is very good. Make sure it explains the rules, staff members, and what your server is all about. Make a good banner. Banners can be made in many places. Just search up "Banner Creator" On Google. Have Pictures of spawn on images. You can also make a video on youtube. Use a screen recording program such as BSR Screen Recorder and Fraps.That is the basics for advertising.

Websites are very important. Having a website can make people more active. Websites widen the community to a whole new level. Websites don't need to be some fancy 50$ a month hosting plan. Use Enjin, or Webs, or Weebly. These company's offer free website hosting. I use DevilDogsHosting, They offer a .com domain for only 10$, ten if you are buying a server from them web hosting is free! On your website you want to have a number of pages. The home page should have a bunch of information about the server, such as pictures, and just what the server is all about. Then you can make a forums page. On that page you can make a couple discussions. You can make them General Discussions, Ban Disputes, Staff complaints, Ideas to make server better, Staff applications. You need a donations page. If you have trouble paying for a server, make a donator rank. Give them special privileges and give them special items. Make it so that more stuff is more money. Te difficult part people always worry about is payment. How in the world are they going to pay you? Well when using Paypal on webs it gets easy. Webs has an app called donations.... I think. Just put in your paypal email and some other info and your done. It is very simple. That is all for your server website.

- Good Grammar
- Follow the rules even when no staff is on, you can do this by looking at console or by going invisible with "Vanish No Packet" A plugin to vanish in game. Link will be in another blog post.

- And that they are mature and not some 6-11 year old that are still n00bs at minecraft
You must be able to trust your staff. The ranks I use for my server is from lowest to highest-
- Novice (Training Staff)
- Moderator (Basic Staff Commands)
- Administrator (More Commands)
- Head Moderator (OP In Charge of all Moderators)
- Head Administrator (OP In charge of all Administrators)
- Co-Owner (OP Highest rank before owner)
- Owner (OP Owns Server, has the highest say in everything)
