Oh hey, thanks for swinging by :). Today, I will be discussing what I've learned so far from building so you may gain more insight on the matter. From improving to finding your building style, minecraft is certainly a great place for people to be able to get a feel for creating things. I hope that you don't look at this blog and leave because its long, so scroll down and find something that you want to know more about, you don't have to read it all. I honestly hope you enjoy this, it sure was fun putting it together :)

I've always been asked "how can I improve my building style?" There's only so much I or anyone else can tell you like researching different building styles or keys ways to get around things, the list goes on. If you really want to expand on your building abilities, the secret to being a better builder is to keep building. I know it sounds stupid, but lets think about it; every time you build something, you lay a foundation for the next time you build.

For example: you open a new world and decide to build a tower out of stone, a perfect square 12 by 12 meters, and 40 meters tall meaning 4 floors. Now that you have created this tower, you have something to base your improvement off of next time, basically you will know what you can do better on.
...
Now you come back the next morning refreshed and ready to start. You look back on the tower that you previously made and notice some things that could be better. Instead of making a boring square, you may decide that a circle could be more interesting. You decided to make the first floor into a lobby as to add contrast between the other floors. You decided to make the tower 70 blocks tall, and the pattern on the exterior of the building is a mix of two different blocks. That is how you get better, always continue building and be willing to try new things. Well, speaking about that...

It is important to always try new things and keep yourself sharp so you can bring out the full capability of your creativity. I understand that we as people don't like changes, but its crucial that you are able to adapt to new ideas and ways of doing things so you have a good unique building style.

Seriously, why is this so important?

Well, to be honest, I don't always want to be making little wood houses that look the same. I like to make my wood house, but then maybe a brick house, and an even bigger stone brick house. As the house progression continues, my houses just get better and better. It's simple, just every now and then, do something different.

Coming up with your own style is the same way a jazz musician prepares for an improv solo: they research, find things they like from previous performers, and combine what they liked most to form a solo with different variations and an overall one-of-a-kind feel. In essence, you're doing the same except thing through architecture: you research, find things you like, and include them in your next build. Every time you find something you thought was spectacular, you then add it to your "bag of tricks". What I mean by that is you have a place, not physical, but mentally where you store all the ideas that define your style. It's not necessarily "stealing" for you to include parts of other people's ideas in your over all build, just make sure you don't entirely take credit for someone's idea. This is where your "bag of tricks" comes in handy.

Now, I understand if some of you would consider the "bag of tricks" to be a horrid form of taking what rightfully belongs to someone, but lets think about this. If you were to isolate someone in a room with nothing but a computer with minecraft and you told then to build a city, they would refer to what they've already seen in the world: from the streets to the towers. Basically, they would be using their bag of tricks to formulate the way their city looks. The "bag of tricks" isn't stealing, its inspiration.

Throughout the course of history, architecture is mainly based off of what is happening during a period of time. For example:

-Roman architecture: meant to show a great amount of authority of wealth; triumph. Durning this time is when the Romans were conquering across Europe, and their style or architecture reflects the power they possessed.

-Victorian architecture: a style which was often related to good ornamentation and a well balanced shape, light and even colors or look of the building.

These two examples were styles of architecture that reflected what was happening in the world. I personally like these styles because they are generally grandiose and very interesting to awe at. But I leave it to you, find several styles of building you like, and learn from them, add them to your bag of tricks. Research buildings and find what you like most, then try building. At first it may be difficult, but remember what I mentioned about improving: always continue building and be willing to try new things.

I hope that this helped you understand a bit more about improving and choosing your building style. What you have just read took me years to learn, and I wrote this so that people may better understand the building progression. Remember that building is not for the xp or fame, its for the enjoyment and pride of saying "I made that". So, go on! Build something and show it to me :).

Guys, I would also like to especially thank you for helping me achieve level 30! I promise to continue building and blogging until my hearts content c:

Also, if you ever get stuck on what to build, my friend Soggytractor has a 100 list for ya :)

Thank you for pointing that out!

I used a castle in this blog because so many people can understand what a castle looks like. The goal I support is that you ought to start out with something familiar to you, then work your way up. For me, my big thing is making realistic Rollercoasters that you can ride. It's all just what you're comfortable doing really.
