Step 1 - Planning
This is the house we will be using today! It looks alright by itself, but lets see what it'll look like with some good landscaping.
;-) The first step to a great yard or garden is planning. Here I've made a color code, so when I plan out where I want everything to go in the yard I'll know eactly what to put down. What I did here was placed where I thought trees, water, flower beds, and other objects or bushes would look good, simple as that! :D

Step 2 - Picking your Blocks
This is the simplest step of all, picking the blocks you're gonna use! As you can see below I picked out my blocks in the street, so that they wouldn't be in the way, and at any time I can come back and see what I picked incase I forget. For this house, I picked 6 flowers, 3 bushes, 1(Ends up being 2!) tree type, and 3 plants to mix in with grass. If you're wondering how I picked those, here's the secret... They're my favorite! :-D
Step 3 - Flower Beds
Now the fun part, actually landscaping!! I always start with the flower beds first. What I DO is outline it with smooth stone slabs, and then I place stone pressure plates on top. In my opinion, it looks like a clean outline of rocks are showing off the flower beds. You can do whatever materials you want however. (Some like logs facing straight up and wooden pressure plates on top) When filling in the flower beds I suggest using bonemeal first (DONT SPAM IT) and deleting all the flowers, so you have easy grass. Then I fill in the spots with my flowers, bushes, and plants. Doing this results in a beautiful randomized flower bed, such as below.
You can see it's already coming along well. :-)

Step 4 - Water/Ponds/Pools
The next step is is filling in your water. If I have a pond, I like to make the deepest point 2 blocks down and the floor gravel. Experiment with different shapes, heights, and floor materials until you find the one YOU prefer! :-)
Step 5 - Trees
This may be the longest step, but even more so one of the most important. I almost always end up changing my trees location, because when planning it's hard to imagine what it will look like when it's done. I make all my trees, or someone in LBS does for me. ;-) If you really aren't good at trees, it's alright to use default ones instead. (Practice makes perfect though)
Step 6 - Final Touches
Last but not least, filling in! This is where you make your water stand out, fill in spots with bushes and plants, and add objects such as bridges, tire swings, benches, etc. to finish off your now beautiful yard.
