The Iron Golem – being one of the most dangerous creatures in Minecraft, is definitely not to be messed with. The same applies for the polar bear, spawning commonly in snowy biomes and attacking in herds, dealing massive damage with their attacks. And so, the question of the day – which of the two is mightier, the almighty metal behemoth or the arctic predator?

Actually, the result depends mostly on the reader’s way of conducting the fight. For instance, in a one-on-one fight, an Iron Golem can easily annihilate a single polar bear with its smash attack, dealing up to 31 HP of damage in a single blow (excluding fall damage). On the other hand, in extreme conditions, a large herd of polar bears can easily destroy a Golem with its swarm attack. Considering that, according to Gamepedia, polar bears spawn naturally in packs of up to five bears with a minimum of two, the average number of bears spawned in a specific location should be around four. However, here’s the thing – when aggravated, the attacked polar bear will only cause nearby bears in a 41x41 block area to retaliate against the attacker, whereas faraway bears will not take part in the fight. Thus, it is reasonable to suggest that, since polar bears can wander quite far away from each other in a short amount of time, including one bear less in the fight would be quite fair.

Okay, now on to the more interesting stuff – which of the two, the three bears or the Golem, pack a more powerful attack? In normal difficulty, a polar bear can deal up to 6 HP in a single blow, whereas Iron Golems can deal from 7 up to 21 HP of damage (average 14 HP). The attack speed of the polar bear is around 1 second a blow, and 2.5 seconds for the Iron Golem. However, polar bears, unlike Iron Golems, are unable to deal damage to an opponent if they are interrupted in the middle of their attack process. So, as the Iron Golem attacks one bear at a time, the other two bears will be able to deal up to 12 HP of damage in a second or two, whereas the attacked bear will only be able to attack around once without being interrupted. As it takes a Golem around 6 seconds to finish off a polar bear in two strikes, by the time the Golem has killed the first bear, the other two bears would’ve dealt around 48 HP of damage [(6/1.5)x12]. Combined with the slain bear’s attack, that makes 54 HP of damage. Then, by the time the Iron Golem slays the second bear, the third bear would’ve dealt around 24 HP of damage on its own. Combined with the second bear’s attack, that would make 30 HP of damage, leaving the Iron Golem with around 16 HP of health. By the time the third bear has been slain, the Golem should have around 10 HP left.
