xShadowStarx's story prompt

The full moon shined through the dark purple clouds. Its rays reached the forest to make the dewdrops glitter. All the forest is quiet and still.. until there is a small light floating above a lily, like a tiny star that came from the heavens. It then dreamily fluttered through a clump of forget-me-nots and flew slowly to a small door at the base of a tree. It carefully opened it and tiptoed inside...

My Continuation

The radiance of the tiny light barely registered in the inky black void of the tree. She gingerly felt her way along the inside of the cavernous trunk, stepping over leaves and twigs that had fallen into the hollow. Slowly she came to a complete halt and looked about herself. No matter how hard she tried she could barely see a thing.

She knew what she had to do. Taking a deep breath she steadied herself and forced all of her concentration internally and into the light that softly glowed from her soul. Gradually her light grew stronger, the luminous little being made of starlight and whispered sorrow flared into brilliance.

All around her the tree came into bright focus, her light reaching every corner, banishing all shadows into the night. Once more she could see the beauty and brilliance of the Evertree in all it's glory. It made her gasp and her light wavered in response, she forgot how big the tree was inside and how very, very beautiful. All along the insides were tiny carvings that lined the wall. Ornate staircases and walkways criss-crossed high up into the unseen heights.

She did her best to keep her light steady but her concentration was weakening and the light flickered in stops and starts. Eventually her focus waned and the darkness came back. This time however the darkness wasn't as complete as a myriad of mushrooms that lined the walls and floor of the tree were now glowing with a soft blue glow in response to her light.

She walked over to the nearest mushroom and touched it. It was soft and smooth and felt warm to her hand. Distant memory flared into her consciousness.

Long ago this was a place of magic, where the Fae Folk, Dryad, Pyxie, Elf, Wytch, Druid, Spirit, Elemental and many more gathered. This was where they would convene to talk about important matters. The last time the little light was here she was banished and sent far away to live in the heavens, never to return. She spent what felt like an eternity in the sky looking down at the earth far below. Always her eyes were on this forest, always on this very tree.

She had tried so hard to convince everyone that there was a darkness approaching, a darkness that they must flee from. They wouldn't listen. In desperation she had decided to scale the Evertree and talk to the Spirit of the Woods who lived at the top of the tree. Surely if she could convince the Spirit of the danger then they could all leave and head to safety.

She knew that it was forbidden to talk to the Spirit but she also knew that she must try. She crept her way inside and up into the labyrinthine Evertree. She had been a wood nymph so she knew her way around a tree and how to remain undetected. She had made it into the Sanctum of the Spirit and had only taken two steps in when she had been apprehended by the Elven Wardens.

They had woven a spell of silence on her and she was sentenced to banishment. In three thousand years nobody had dared stepped foot in the Sanctum unbidden. She was stripped of her earthly body and her soul had been placed amongst the stars where her punishment was to look forever more down on her beloved home but never return.

That had been what felt like an eternity ago. A scarce few hours ago she felt her bonds break and she had floated softly down to the place she had longed to be, back to the Evertree. She knew that the only way that her bonds had been released was if the magic of the wood had vanished. Sadly she took the final few steps up into the Sanctum of the Spirit, into the chamber that had cost her so dearly.
It was dark and still, her heartbeat was the loudest sound in the room. In the middle of the room was a raised section that had a throne made of tree roots atop it. She ascended the steps to the throne and noticed a small piece of folded paper stuck to the back of the chair. She looked around and sensed that there was nothing living here other than the Evertree and the mushrooms giving her their faint glow.

She took the paper and unfolded it slowly. Inside was a handwritten note made up of Forest runes and tree glyphs. It had six simple words written on it.

"You were right, magick must survive."

The little light dropped the note which fluttered to the floor. Where it landed the ground started glowing. At first just a very dull glow that eventually turned into a golden spray of sparks and arcing dust particles. Ribbons of gold light and sparks burst from the floor and wrapped themselves around the little light.

At first she was terrified but she soon felt that the golden aura enveloping her meant her no harm. In fact it seemed to be filling her with power and strength! She felt her own light glowing stronger than ever and her senses grew exponentially sharper. She could feel every living thing within a hundred mile radius. Every thing that walked, scurried, burrowed or flew was laid bare to her.

Not only could she sense them but she could see through their eyes, feel through their skin and know their minds. She felt the bark of the tree enveloping her spirit and fortifying it in a natural living armour, stronger than any metal. Long sharp sticks like spines protruded from her back and formed wicked claws on her hands. She had become one with the Evertree and the Evertree had given itself over to her completely.

"Hear me Forest. I will find my brothers and sisters and I will return us to power."

When she spoke the earth shook for miles around, torrents of wind whipped up gales that felled trees and shook mountains. All the creatures of the forest heeded her call and all of them stared straight at her in the Evertree regardless of where they stood.

"For three thousand years the human scourge has scoured the earth of magick. No more, today we go to war for magick, for myth, for freedom. Tonight the reclamation has begun!"

Across the world that night every human had nightmares and those that lay awake felt the shaking of the earth beneath their beds. Magick had awakened and nothing would ever be the same again.
