Making Chainmail

I think to make chainmail in Minecraft you should take three iron ingots and then put them into a workbench then you should put them three in a row horizontally that would make one chain and then use the chains to craft a chestplate or other armor. This would be stronger then iron but weaker then diamond.

I actually think that it should involve putting three iron ingots in a row on crafting table to create 3 chain, then you can craft them in armor. I don't understand why smelting armor would turn it into chain armor. No offense about your idea, by the way. :D

How about 1 iron ingot which makes 2 iron links. and place these links into the appropriate armor slots thus making it cheaper than iron and therefore weaker. Whereas your idea of chain mail is just as expensive as iron armor. :]
