Meeting the Mailman

If this doesn't touch you. YOU HAVE NO HEART! Jk. I wrote this on my moral lessons for English plus we were doing poems kill two birds with one stone right? Here goes.

I was reading by the window,

Glare came across my eyes.

I looked up and saw him

A mailman to my surprise.

I notice him every day,

Yet I do not know his name.

I made a goal to learn it,

Even if it might be lame

Every day I try to catch him,

Every day he skirts away.

Then one week later,

He decided to stay.

He was very timid,

And didn’t say a lot,

He said his name was “Carl Yount,

And I have to go to the pot.”

His excuse to get away comical,

But I wanted to know more

He seemed like a nice guy,

Even if his job was a bore.

I got the mail every day,

And timed it exact,

So I could meet him,

When his light would refract.

We became friends quickly,

And he likes my presence.

Every time I got the mail,

He would turn around at my essence.

Two weeks later,

When he was at my court,

He looked so glum,

An unhappy kind of sort.

I asked him, “What’s wrong?”

With a worried tone,

“My mother’s dead,”

He said so prone,

“No one’s left,

My life is amuck.

My house is foreclosed,

I’m waiting to be wonder struck.

“I’m so sorry,”

I said out the gloom,

“If you need a place

 You can have my room.”

“That’s ok,

I have a motel,

But if I need help,

I know someone to go tell.”

He left on such a sad note,

I didn’t know what to say.

I went back inside

Pondering of the day.

The next day I saw his light,

I ran out to talk once again,

But it was not him,

It was another mailman.

I asked where Carl was,

The mailman looked and said,

“I’m so sorry he is…

At the hospital, almost dead.”

“What happened!”

I stood there shouting.

“He was in a horrible wreck,”

The mailman stated pouting.

I told him stay here,

And I gave him ten dollars cash.

He said, “Ok.”

And I was back quick as a flash.

In my hands were two cards,

One a condolence for his mother,

I teared up writing it,

And a get well soon in the other.

I forced the mailman

To drive me to him.

I felt bad,

And wanted to make him grin.

I saw Carl,

His heartbeat fading.

I gave him the cards.

And he sat there grading.

“Thank you so much,

Life is worth living

When someone cares,

And they are giving.”

He stayed alive,

With those cards.

He persevered,

When life is hard.

Learn about someone,

Even by name

Feels good inside

Makes someone have fame.
