Minecraft crafting is the process through which tools, weapons and other items are made from raw materials and resources. The durability of tools and weapons depends on how strong the materials that are used to make them are. When exposed to a number of uses, the durability bar (which can be seen under each individual tool or weapon) will slowly decrease. The item will break once the durability bar completely runs out. To succeed in Minecraft, it is important to learn the crafting recipes and to remember which materials are the strongest so that your items you make will be more durable.

The process of minecraft crafting requires you to place certain raw materials in a particular pattern on either the 2x2 or 3x3 crafting grid to craft a specific item. The 2x2 grid can be found on your inventory screen, but the 3x3 grid can only be accessed by building a crafting table. The crafting recipe for a workbench can be found below.

Once you build the crafting table, place it on the ground, look at it and right-click to access the 3x3 crafting grid. The difference between the two is that the 3x3 grid is required to make most of the items in Minecraft, including all the most useful tools and weapons.

The most simple thing about the use of these grids to craft items is that once the correct pattern for an item is used and the correct raw materials are placed on the grid then no matter where the materials are placed produce the same tool. For example, a fishing pole can be crafted facing to the left or to the right. Any crafting recipe can be flipped horizontally and still work. Another interesting feature of the crafting grids is that the 3x3 grid can be used to craft any 2x2 sized recipe.

When trying to remember a crafting recipe, try to visualize what the shape of the final product is and what materials it is made from. The more crafting recipes you can remember, the fewer times you will have to refer to a list of crafting recipes.

The recipe for a pickaxe is used so often so its recipe is probably the most important to memorize. A very simple method to remember crafting recipes is as follows. To create a pickaxe, you need two sticks and three pieces of one of the following resources: gold, wood, stone, iron or diamond. You can think of the two small sticks as the long handle of the axe. These two are placed at the centre of the 3x3 grid. To make the blade of the axe, the three other resources are placed across the top three boxes on the grid. If you think about it, the pattern for the recipe actually makes sense because it somewhat resembles the shape of a pickaxe. Visualizing the tool or item you are crafting makes it much easier to remember the layout of the recipe.

Many other different tools can be made with the use of different other resources so it is important to be able to remember as many as you can so you can build the right tool whenever you need to without interrupting your game. Other important aspects that one should know and keep in mind when it comes to crafting in Minecraft is that the harder the resource used to make a tool then the longer it will last.

Whenever you hit an enemy or mine a block, the strength of your tool is decreased by one point. The remaining durability of a weapon or tool can be seen underneath its icon in your inventory. Once the bar is empty, the item has one more use before it breaks and disappears. If you use a tool for the wrong purpose then it two uses are counted against it, which makes it wear out much faster. This also affects how much your armor will protect you. If it has lost a lot of its durability, then it won't protect you from as much damage every time an enemy hits you.
