Though the announcement of Minecraft on Oculus Rift was broad (there still is no official release date aside from first quarter 2016), it incites a ton of excitement and raises some questions.

First with the details, Spring 2016 is the tentative release date announced on Sept. 24 by Brand Director for Mojang Lydia Winters and at the Oculus Connect 2 conference in Los Angeles by Oculus Rift inventor Palmer Luckey. The Windows 10 version of Minecraft will be the one compatible with the Rift and Mojang founder Markus Persson (aka Notch) would rather continue to play Phantom Pain than go into detail about the announcement, per his tweet, “My opinion on minecraft/oculus? Neato! Now back to ignoring Quiet because D.D. obviously is much better.”

As experts from official site report Minecraft stunned fans earlier this year at E3 with a HoloLens demo that took the world from a flat screen and transferred it to the third dimension via tabletop. Now what makes this more recent VR announcement interesting is a game of who owns what. Microsoft purchased Mojang for 2.5 billion dollars Sept. last year, and Microsoft also owns the Oculus Rift competitor the HoloLens, which is owned by Facebook as of March 2014.

“The Oculus VR headset will immerse you in a virtual reality Minecraft world,” said Winters, “where as always you will be able to play in creative or survival mode but in full 3D.” Politics of business aside, what fan of Minecraft can’t get excited by the thought of thwarting off digital creepers?
