The night was silent as the moon waned on. The reflection of the stars in the pond sparkled as if they were gems amongst a vast sea. The smooth trickle of the stream followed by the splashing on the rocks. The blue flowers swayed gently in the midnight breeze, as did the leaves of the trees. Gentle, this night was.

On the hill, there was a house where a gentile soul lay at rest. He slept in comfort and peace as he dreamed. The house was silent; there was not a sound in the home except that of the crackling fire place, with made a soft lambent glow across the ruffled wooden floor.

He awoke from his peaceful slumber in a cold sweat, almost as if something had startled him. He slunk out of his bed and onto is legs, only to discover that he'd forgotten to close the window near his night stand before going to sleep. He abruptly closed it and settled back in bed. He tried to return to his soothing slumber, but he couldn't stop thinking about what lay outside his brittle glass window.

He gazed through the window, into a beautiful view of the country side. He saw the bird gliding effortlessly through the air, and the smooth green hills with a perfect bed of grass. He thought to himself, that this couldn't be the more perfect place to live. He had everything he needed, and the land was plentiful in bearing him with supply's and food. But he wondered, what would become of me if I weren't to have this wonderful place?

The thought bewildered him. He did not want to think about life away from his home, for he had fought so hard to secure it, to keep its natural beauty pristine. He eventually had fallen back to sleep, dreaming about his imperfect world.

...

The Rooster sounded early in the morning, almost startling him out of bed. He awoke with a face of tiredness, due to the long night that had just passed. He sat up in bed, and was very flaccid as he attempted to move his body. It was almost a chore for him to get his right leg out of the bed. He dragged his leg through the many layers of sheets and covers until it had made its way to the floor with a solid thud. He did the same with his left leg, until both feet were positioned on uneven wood floor. He trust himself upward, and eventually found himself standing. He dragged his body, one leg still asleep, over to the sink. He splashed cool water from the spring upon his face. Then, he had remembered what he was thinking about during the witching hours of the night.

All it took was the wind blowing through the window to make him think that there lay a cruel and vile world beyond the threshold of his oaken door. He was worried about what surprises may be waiting outside for him, but he had to tend to his animals and make sure everyone was well fed. His first step past the door, he felt the warm sunlight splash across his face . He saw green pasture as far as the eye could see, and the cool blue water of the pond. He felt a sense of dignity in side him, for he lived in such an imperfect land.

After milking the cows, he collected the chicken eggs and ventured back to his home. He placed to milk next to the sink, and was planning to make it into smooth, creamy butter that evening to accommodate the bread he had baked on the previous day. He washed all of the eggs, then sat two of them aside for breakfast.

The eggs made a very enjoyable sizzling noise in the iron cooking skillet. The delicious aromas of frying eggs soon filled the small cabin. As he cooked, he gazed out his window onto the pasture, and wondered again what would it be like without his home? Would life be cruel and violent as depicted, or was there a safe place amongst all the madness of the world?

As the first greasy bite of egg entered is mouth, he suddenly remembered what his life was before he had found this sanctuary. Life was a slow, grim losing battle and he'd always struggled to keep a foothold in the chaos. Night time raids by mobs were frequent, and he was almost killed once when a creeper blew up his families home. Oh, how he'd missed his family.

To this day, he had not heard from or seen his family since the last great mob attack. He was one of the commanding officers in the effort to remove the hostilities from the land in what was called the "cleansing days", and make it a safe place for his kind to prosper. Those times of uncertainty seemed as if it were ages ago, and the land he had once helped to clear was now his home.

As he finished with his breakfast, he brought his plate over to the sink. He scrubbed all the little pieces of egg off, washed it, as set the plate to dry. He started out the little kitchen window, gazing at the glimmering water to the grass swaying gently in the wind. Now he was so confused as to what he was doing here, in this Eden of perfection.

He was abruptly interrupted from his trance, when there was a loud knock on his door. To him, this was strange because he never got visitors, he was always isolated to himself and his thoughts. He was not quick to open the door, because he had not a clue who, or what it was. He gracefully made his way to the oaken door. Before he could peer through the viewing glass, he heard someone yell "Commander! Are you here? Commander!"

The ill truth sent chills down his spine, as he realized that the person on the other side of the thick door was his lieutenant. "Sir, come in, please come in!" He said in a warm deep voice. His lieutenant stumbled his way over to the small table where he took a seat. "Water" he exclaimed, "I need water!" The lieutenant's commander went over to the small sink to fetch him a large mug of water.

As the commander brought the mug back to his lieutenant, he reached out to grasp for the water as a child does to get their favorite toy. The lieutenant drank the water in such a hurry that it started spilling down his long, unkept beard. After he finished his water, he caught his breath and said "Commander, the east....gate has been obstructed. The small village of Niles went up in flames just days ago...it is brunt to the ground, and all the inhabitants proclaimed either dead or missing!"

The Commander looked at himself in the Windows's reflection, then back at his lieutenant. He thought to himself; had his Nightmare become reality. He thought of all the work that went into securing the vast meadow lands, and how he thought that everyone was to be safe in this Eden among wasteland. The thought that one of the walls had be breached, and an entire village gone made him uneasy. Sweat started running down his cheeks, he had not a clue what to do.

"Commander, come to! What the devil has gotten into you?" the lieutenant asked. The Commander was trying to keep his leg from shaking under the table, for he knew what had blown in through the East Gate. "The Dragon, ha...has escaped" the commander managed to mutter out and he stared blankly at a painting of a small castle on his wall. The lieutenant's eyes narrowed when he realized the steepness of this situation.

"Commander, we have to leave sir, we mustn't wait another minute" the lieutenant said slowly.

"No! I must stay here at hearth, they will come back, they promised!" Cried the commander. "I have worked to hard for to long just to see everything crumble like this."

"Sir, I miss my family to" the lieutenant said, "and if we don't leave now, we may never see anyone we love again. There's no shame in running."

"Shame? Have you no idea of that word?" Exclaimed the commander. "If you ever run away from something, you will never forget it"

"Commander, I didn't come here to tell you about the breach. I came here to give this to you" said the lieutenant, as he handed the commander a small piece of blue cloth.

The Commander knew exactly what this was. It was a fragment from the blue dress that his wife had made for his daughter. He thought that now he might finally have a chance at finding them, that they could be a family at last. Without a word from his lieutenant, he began to pack up his things in such a unordered fashion. "What's that for?" Asked the lieutenant in confusion. The Commander stopped for a moment, the said in a warm and bold voice "Come, round up your things. We're going to the City of Limos!"
