Hi guys, Greytopher here with another blog. This time, I'll be talking about the use of the update log that we use on PMC. Some people use this legitly while others like to abuse their power of having it; only having it to 'bump their post to the top' so it can be viewed more. Here's my perspective on the situation...

What's The Point?

Sometimes, like on projects, people like to update their work by using the update log (that's it's primary use). They add something extra to their build, and inform us about what has been updated. I don't mind this since that's what it's meant for; you're only using it to update your subscribers on how the project is progressing by what you recently added, subtracted, or changed in any way.

Servers have a similar button to this that allows them to, not really update their server, but to 'bump' it to the top of the submission reel. In this case, it allows servers to be bumped, get more views, and in turn, get more players. I understand this button, since the minute you post it will most likely be the most players you'll get on your server. If it's not updated, it'll be looked at like a dead server, and no one would want to join it.

This may look like a pretty nooby thing to talk about, but sometimes people don't know the actualuse of it is. That's why, in the paragraphs following, I'll need to explain to those pesky whipper snappers of what they shouldn't do.

What Are You NOT Allowed to Do?

Now, this is something that seems to go over everybody's head. There are lots of people who use this button strictly to get their work on the front page, so people can look at it. That's where the use of the update log got a lot of rules following it; people simple couldn't: A) comprehend how to use it, or B) just plain old 'I can break the rules whenever I want' or, typical C) 'I didn't know that was a rule!'

Some people, like I've stated in previous blogs, only want fame, subscribers, diamonds, etc. and it's sad to see people consumed by stuff like that. The update log is like a catalyst for people to see their posts. Since the update log (I think) only gets you to the top of the list once every 24 hours, all they put instead of actual changes is 'hay looks bump hah lol'. This of course, is breaking the rules, and making yourself look dumb/desperate.

There's people in chat everyday that approach me with the same questions. One of which is 'I can't update my server, but it's been x amount of time. Halp!'. Most of the time, my reason is that they haven't waited enough time to bump their submission (and that's what it usually is), but then I get sucked into an argument of how I'm wrong. Some people are so desperate to update their submission, that it just takes control of them, and they NEED to update it, or else all hell will break loose somehow.

This Can Also Apply to The Forums...

Now when bumping posts, this doesn't just have to apply to things that happen strictly to the site. Of course this blog is about the update log, but this can also happen to Forum posts aswell. I think the forums are a lot more obvious when someone tries to 'bump' their post, mostly because you can see it a lot more clearly/you can see the most recent forum posts on the right-hand side of your screen.

But since this does happen in the forums and not the site, it doesn't mean that bumping still isn't allowed. Bumping posts just because their not getting any responses won't get any more responses, it in turn, will only get you more hate/possibly a forum warning and/or ban.

Using it Wisely...

Now there's a time and place for everything, and having your need to update your submission every minute so it can be on the front page is never the time nor place. If you really need to update your submission, actually give it some change. "Fixed grammar and added a paragraph." "Re-did terraforming on side of the mountain." or "Changed stonebrick with emerald".

Something so little can do so much greatness or pain, so be sure not to overdue yourself with it. It's a really great tool to help inform your subscribers of what you're doing. Whatever the case, it's there to be your friend, what it's not there for is to have 46 update logs all saying 'bump'. Think smart about what you're doing, you don't want that to be the downfall of yourself on this website.

Yeah, people shouldn't just use the update log because they want views, diamonds, xp, ect. People who care about levels and that crap are self-centered. You see, PMC is a site for art and for people to enjoy things other people make. This site isn't a game where you collect coins and there is a winner.
