He was coming home today,
a hero was coming home.
She could feel it now,
She couldn’t wait,
Her hero was on his way.
A knock on the door,
a heart pounding in excitement.
“I’m sorry miss, but he is dead.”
She was handed a letter from him, and she knew,
her hero was never coming home.
And as she stayed, hidden away
Her light would fade, day after day
Until one morning, when she decided
She would go out, then something collided
She stumbled and looked around, confused
A ball at her feet, and children amused
Playing around, having much fun
A care in the world, each one having none
And as she looked, she had seen
Life all around, and all in between
Children playing together all day
The smiles on their faces, so happy and gay
A flower in bloom, in tune with the season
A couple together, forgoing all reason
Looking around, she could see
The wonder in all, going on perfectly
She ran back to the house
Scurrying like a tiny little mouse
Breezes caught her blouse
As she prepared to remember her marriage vows.
As she arrives in their room
She is reminded of her husband’s tomb
Across the room, she smells a distinct perfume
The dreaded letter, abloom.
The day had come
When no longer she had to feel glum
Winds, sounds, clocks came to a clum
As she opened the letter with her thumb
"I did not die
For I am forever in the sky
I’ll always guide you with my eye
My sweet little pumpkin pie"
