Looking for a cool datapack that adds just a few changes, to play alone or with your friends?

Then this datapack is not for you.

Welcome to:

Will Grind or Cry

This dapatack will change completely how you play the game.

Compatible with Minecraft 1.16 - 1.17, Singleplayer AND Multiplayer!

What this datapack is about:

★ Progressive Tools and Armor
★ New Craftings and Recipes
★ New Enchantments
★ Better Foods

And what makes this datapack so special?

Well, for starters, you can not wear ANY kind of armor, if not one of the new progressive crafted ones. If you try wearing them, they will have 0 durability once worn, so any kind of damage or hit it will break.

Also, you can not hold ANY tool as well, or they also will get 0 durability, except wooden tools so that you can get started.

"But... how am I supposed to play the game then?"

Let me explain how the crafting system works and you'll understand right away.

To craft any of the new custom crafts and progressions, you will need just a crafting table. But instead of using it, just throw the ingredients over it, and the item will be crafted, with cool particles and sound effects.

The recipes are the following:

Recipes Will Grind or Cry v1.5

64 Oak Planks + Wooden Pickaxe = Wooden Pickaxe (Unbreakable)
64 Birch Planks + Wooden Axe = Wooden Axe (Unbreakable)
64 Spruce Planks + Wooden Sword = Wooden Sword (Unbreakable)
64 Acacia Planks + Wooden Shovel = Wooden Shovel (Unbreakable)
64 Dark Oak Planks + Wooden Hoe = Wooden Hoe (Unbreakable)

Those are the first tier or progression for tools, and as you can see, they all are Unbreakable. All tools and armor are Unbreakable, but fear not, it does not make it any easier the game. It just shifts the difficulty of the game as you will see.

After those first tools progressions, all others are pretty similar. You will need the previous tier of the desired tool + ingredients:

64 Stones (not cobble) + Wooden Tool = Stone Tool
16 Gold Blocks + Stone Tool = Golden Tool
32 Iron Blocks + Golden Tool = Iron Tool
64 Diamonds + Iron Tool = Diamond Tool
1 Netherite Block + Diamond Tool = Netherite Tool

Pretty straightfoward right? For example, if you have a Golden Shovel, for it's next upgrade you'll have to throw it + 32 Iron Blocks over a crafting table, and you craft an Iron Shovel.

Armor is very similar, for the first tiers you will need the armor piece (Helmet/Chestplate/Leggings/Boots) + 64 Leather, and you will craft the first tier of armor. (Leather Armor) Unbreakable.

As such:

64 Leather + Normal Leather Armor = Leather Armor (first tier)
16 Gold Blocks + Leather Armor = Golden Armor
32 Iron Blocks + Golden Armor = Iron Armor
64 Diamonds + Iron Armor = Diamond Armor
1 Netherite Block + Diamond Armor = Netherite Armor

You got the gist of it by now right?

You will have a lot to grind A LOT if you want to have better tools and it will make you think a lot about which tool or armor to craft first, do you want to improve your defense because you are feeling weak? Or do you want to upgrade your tools/weapons so that you can grind better? Lots of question rises as you start dwelving in this playthrought. And yes, as stupid as it sounds, enchanting your Leather Armor early game helps a lot since you will realize you won't have enough gold for anything.

That rises another question, how do you mine gold if you need an iron pickaxe to mine it, but in the progression is Stone>Golden> and then Iron Pickaxe?

You can always mine golden nuggets in the nether, and once you have a fortune pickaxe you'll see that it might be the fastest way to get lots of gold.

OR you can craft the Gold Miner:

Any Iron Pickaxe + 16 Yellow Die = Gold Miner

It is a pickaxe that only allows you to mine gold while holding (you'll be set to adventure mode)

That allow you to mine gold blocks you find in the overworld without having to wait until you get an Iron Pickaxe.

Please note: only one craft per time, specially if they use the same materials, you might lose your items and craft wrong stuff if you do lots of things at once.

Example: Don't throw two stacks of leather and two leather armor at the same time. Craft one piece at time.

Better Foods:

Foods have different effects when eaten, so you will be rewarded by making farms you normally don't.

Beetroot Soup = Heals 4 HP when eaten.
Mushroom Stew = Gives the player regeneration.
Melon Slice = Gives the player Strenght for 1 minute.
Cookies = Gives the player Speed for 1 minute.
Pumpkin Pie = Gives the player 2 extra hearts for 5 minutes.
Golden Carrots = Gives the player Haste for 2 and a half minutes.
Dried Kelp = Gives the player Fire Resistance for 30 seconds.
Cake Slices = Gives the player Resistance for 5 minutes.

Be rewarded for cooking different foods!

New Enchantments:

You can craft 7 new enchantments.

Night Vision (Helmet) = Gives the player Night Vision effect for 30 seconds after you jump and sneak at the same time.
Health (Chestplate) = Gives the player 2 extra hearts while wearing the chestplate with this enchantment.
Speed (Leggings) = Gives the player greatly movement speed JUST when you sprint
Jump (Boots) = Gives the player a second of Jump Boost, after you crouch. (Makes sense right? You have to crouch to jump in real life.)
Aquatic Supremacy (Trident) = Gives the player Water Breathing, Conduit Power and Dolphin's Grace when walking or swimming underwater, while holding the Trident with this enchantment. (Might be too op with Depth Strider 3, oh well...)
Revenge (Shield) = Gives the player Strenght II for a short period of time, after succesfully defending against an enemy attack.
Flight (Elytra) = Gives the player Infinite Rockets that can be used only when the Elytra is equiped.

I feel very proud about those enchantments, there are similar out there, but those ones are very unique indeed.

To craft those enchantments you will need as following:

Speed = 5 Ghast Tears + Potion of Swiftness II (Level 2) + a book = Speed Enchanted Book
Jump = 1 Rabbit Foot + Potion of Leaping II ( Level 2) + a book = Jump Enchanted Book
Health = 8 Golden Apple + Potion of Instant Healing II (Level 2) + a book = Health Enchanted Book
Night Vision = 8 Eyes of Ender + Potion of Night Vision (8:00) + a book = Night Vision Enchanted Book
Aquatic Supremacy = 4 Heart of the Sea + 32 Prismarine Crystals + a Nether Star + a book = Aquatic Supremacy Enchanted Book
Revenge = 5 Blocks of Emerald+ Potion of Strenght II (Level 2) + a book = Revenge Enchanted Book
Flight = 9 Compressed Gunpowder + 9 Compressed Paper + a Nether Star + a book = Flight Enchanted Book

64 Gunpowder = Compressed Gunpowder
64 Paper = Compressed Paper

To enchant just throw the Enchanted Book with the armor you want to enchant over the crafting table.

Updated: (after update 1.4)
-
You can only enchant the respective item, so if you try enchanting a chestplate with speed, for example, it won't work.
-There progressive better effects as you enchant better armor. (Ex: if you enchant Leather Leggings with speed, it will give you speed I, but if you enchant Netherite Leggings, you'll get Speed III.)

If you want to remove any of the new custom enchantments just throw the selected item over a grindstone.

Other Crafting Tools and Weapons:

Bow/Crossbow + 16 Cobweb = Bow/Crossbow (Unbreakable)
Fishing Rod + 16 Prismarine Shards = Fishing Rod (Unbreakable)
Shears + 16 Copper Blocks = Shears (Unbreakable)
Flint and Steel + 16 Copper Blocks = Flint and Steel (Unbreakable)
Shield + 32 Iron Blocks = Shield (Unbreakable)
Elytra + Nether Star + 32 Phantom Membrane = Elytra (Unbreakable)
Trident + Heart of the Sea + 16 Prismarine Crystals = Trident (Unbreakable)

Lava Bucket + Water Bucket = Obsidian + 2 Buckets
63 Strings = 7 Cobwebs
64 Redstone Blocks = 64 Exp Bottles
64 Lapis Blocks = 64 Exp Bottles

The obsidian crafting recipe is very useful early game to get enchantments and get to the nether.

Redstone and Lapis blocks WILL get overwhelming since you will be mining a lot, so I gave them a new purpose.

You can also smelt Rotten Flesh, to get Leather (should already be in the game at this point...), and 9 string in the crafting table will craft a Cobweb (normal crafting, not throwing over).

Also if you are wearing Full Netherite Armor (progression ones) you have Infinite Fire Resistance. You deserve it. That was weeks of grind and I respect that. (Heavily inspired by the Effective Netherite Armor datapack, but I coded to work only with this datapack's armor.)

Elytra Plating:
What is Elytra plating? Basically a way to combine your elytra, with the stats of your chestplate (it was not created by me this concept, I just adapted to this datapack).

And how it works? You just throw your chestplate and your elytra in the crafting table, and your Elytra will become Plated.
There is a plating for every kind of chestplate:

Leather Plated = Elytra (Unbreakable) + Leather Chestplate (Unbreakable)
Golden Plated = Elytra (Unbreakable) + Golden Chestplate (Unbreakable)
Iron Plated = Elytra (Unbreakable) + Iron Chestplate (Unbreakable)
Diamond Plated = Elytra (Unbreakable) + Diamond Chestplate (Unbreakable)
Netherite Plated = Elytra (Unbreakable) + Netherite Chestplate (Unbreakable) (works with Netherite Set for Fire Resistance)

IMPORTANT: When crafting the Plated Elytra, you will transfer all the enchantments that were on your chestplate, to the Elytra. Since you can not enchant Elytra with Protection, I suggest you enchant your armor with the desired enchantments before combining with the elytra.

Also, you can upgrade your plating exactly as you would with your normal chestplate:

Leather Plated + 16 Gold Blocks = Golden Plated Elytra
Golden Plated + 32 Iron Blocks = Iron Plated Elytra
Iron Plated + 64 Diamonds = Diamond Plated Elytra
Diamond Plated + 1 Netherite Block = Netherite Plated Elytra

When upgrading, you will keep the same enchantments as you had before (from enchantment table), but you will lose the enchantments from this datapack, so you will have to grind to enchant again :)

You can enchant this Plated Elytra with Flight and Health Enchantments, but the Health Enchantment will give less Health than if you were with a Netherite Armor, so you can still grind for both.

Do you know what is the best about this datapack? You can play with your friends! Yeah, that was kinda hard to code but everything should work perfectly fine (if doesn't please give me feedback and I will try to update it), except for, when someone is holding a tool, a golden pickaxe(progression) for example, and another player has a normal one, the durability of the normal one won't go to 0. But if the person holding the progression tool changes to another slot or stop holding it, it works normally. Also, if you are playing this there is no reason to try to cheat right, it's your choice to even play this datapack and everything it has to offer.

You might think BLOCKS of Iron and Gold might be a lot, but I tested it and played for a few weeks while in development, and it felt balanced this way. I adjusted a lot over time (first days were 64 Blocks of Iron/Gold/Diamond) but now it feels not impossible to get stuff, and not too easy.

Also, I recommend you start a new world with this datapack, or create a backup of your older ones, since you might lose equipment you already made.

By default there is inventory keep on (so you keep your items and xp when you die), since the disappointment is way more painful when you die in lava with your full set of diamond armor and tools, and lose everything. But you can change that in the "data/datapackwill/functions/reload.mcfunction" file, the line "gamerule keepInventory true" to false if you wish to feel the pain.

If you are playing in a server, the keepInventory might work on the overworld normally, but in the end and the nether you might need to type "/gamerule keepInventory true" once you enter the other dimension. Not sure why, maybe because there are different world files, but there is nothing I can do about it.

I hope you enjoy playing it :)

1. what is the point of having armor, if you won't lose anything after death?

2.can you make looting structures not so OP(like decreasing durability to 0 like you did this to crafted ones)? I looted Bastion and now i have diamond armor with diamond sword

So there's a new datapack that adds a few "armor set bonuses" and i think either copying it or putting your own twist on it would be a cool idea for this datapack. and it would encourage having multiple sets and make mending and unbreaking 3 actually have a use. The Datapack

Sounds like a really cool idea :) I'll see if I can think something on it to make it fit without being too op or making other changes redundant, but just when Minecraft 1.17 releases.

As soon as it releases I'm updating this datapack!

You can keep many stacks of those rockets, but if you try holding it without the Flight enchantment equiped it disappear, so there is no point in giving it to other players since they can't use.

Or are you talking about other kind of dupe?

if you keep dropping them they come back and when they come back in your inv they stay. if you have a recycling datapack or mod you could turn those into gunpowder and paper and farm it. or maybe not cause of the nbt tags.
