Best graphics card for my pc?
What would be the best performing graphics card for my pc?
Info you may need (I'm not answering the "Fill this form." posts.):
Budget: $100 + $40 for GPU
Micro Center: There's no way I'm near any of the 25 micro centers.
Best Buy: Yes, a little way away, but yes.
CPU: i3 4150 non-K
Tasks on this PC: School work, minecraft, simcity 4 (heavily modded), simcity 2013, big rigs over the road racing, (what I want from here on out) portal and portal 2, simcity 3000. Virtual machines, and light video recording.
Preference: AMD never ended well for me. But if you want me to use AMD...*says skeptically* I guess I'll go to the dark side. BUT IF YOU GET MY PC FRIED...
OS: Windows 8.1, planning to move over to Ubuntu 14.04 lts
EDIT: Budget is $100 for GPU, an extra $40 for PSU, just wanted to make that clear.
EDIT 2: I can't buy online.
UPDATE: Got PSU for christmas. Budget is a whole $130-140 for GPU.

I had to go with the 740 because that's the best my local best buy had. I know you all are probably walking towards my house with angry pitchforks and torches (and that one person with cotton candy), but the 740 was the best they had. They didn't even have 750s or 750tis in stock. The 760 would've been way too expensive, and the 770-780ti is a no-go zone. The 800 series was never released. The 900 series was way too expensive too. So, final time, Will a mod lock this?

Again,

Ship to store brah (or wait for it to be in stock, the 740 is really not that good)

Site-to-store shipping is the best thing since sliced bread.

And if you still can't order online

UPDATE: Got card. Decided on a ZOTAC GT 740. Installing driver currently. Installation (hardware-wise) wasn't hard. Resolution reset to 1024x768, which makes this page look streched. Can a mod lock this thread?

Why did you just go and buy a graphics card you knew nothing about when you could've gotten a 750 ti? I dont know if wherever you got it from will let you return it, but a 750 ti is way better than a gt 740. C'mon man, you should've atleast checked with us before getting a graphics card
1
You had $140 to spend on a GPU, and you got a GT 740?
Please, do yourself a favor and return it. I'm not asking you to do this for us, but for your own satisfaction and happiness.
Then, get this.
It's so much better than the GT 740. So much, in fact, that you will be kicking yourself for not getting it.

A 740?! Did you listen to us at all?! You could have gotten a 750ti or an R9 270!
1
OP said he got a power supply for Christmas. How many watts is it?
1
430. I installed it and works alright. GPU I got requires 400. So, I got the extra headroom for something such as a sound card or USB card.
1
OP, if the information I found is correct, your computer has a 300 W power supply.
If I were you I would not use a graphics card that requires external power, i.e. one that requires you to plug a PCIe power cable into it.
In your situation, I still recommend a GTX 750 Ti. For NVIDIA, that's the best card you can get; for AMD, the best you'll be able to get is an R7 250, which is not as powerful as a 750 Ti.

No, I've run my 7850 (slight overclocked mind you) with a power hungry Athlon on a 350, so 300 should be enough for the i3 and a 260x. But if you want to cut it safe, and not worry about external power, then go with a 750ti.
1
I'd recommend the AMD R7 260X. It's cheap, fast and reliable for its 2 Year warranty (Depends where you buy it). It can play Battlefield 4 on high/ultra settings with no problems at all.
1
Use the $140 to get a fake gun. Rob a bank. Get a Nvidia Titan Z (how else are you supposed to get one).
1
What Dell computer do you have?
1
Inspiron 3847, Core i3 model. It works pretty fine for MC, SC3KU, SC4, and SC2013, and Portal. Reason I want a graphics card is so I can play the more *cough* intensive *cough* games.
1
Nvidia Geforce Something or rather. I can't remember what model it is, but it's pretty cool, m8o.

Well with a such a low budget. I would say the best choice would be a GTX 750 Ti.
It has great performance for such a low price.
Now im a Nvidia guy

Look on the side of the power supply for the total wattage.
This shows the problem with prebuilt PCs, you know NOTHING about what you are getting. Also, OSs recognize 1GB as 1024MB, while manufactures of HDDs recognize 1GB as 1000MB. So, it is actually 1TB, not just advertised as it. Also, SSDs are worth it, if you didn't have one, why even include it?
supernotch893NavbarryIs anyone else confused about what's being shown? What are the specs of your current pc?
Here's my specs:
Case: Dell OEM case
Mobo: OEM motherboard, mATX form factor if you're wondering, so no SLI.
PSU: Idk what the wattage is, I'm estimating around 300 or so watts.
CPU: i3 4150
HDD: WD Blue 1TB advertised, 931GB actual size
SSD: None, they're not worth it, don't need one.
DVD+/-RW drive: Noname brand drive (16x DVD read, around 24x CD read approx, just a guess.)
Fan (there's only one, never had issues): Sunon fan, idk rpm
OS: Windows 8.1 (amd64)

I can't get a new mobo (that'd cost a lot for me, and I'm already happy with my prebuilt's mobo as is.) But, I'll try to go AMD with those r7 270 graphics cards. Although I never used nvidia, I really wanted to also see if the graphics control panel of nVidia cards crash, like with AMD cards. I can't prove it because my AMD machine is fried. Due to normal use. YOU KNOW YOU HAVE A BAD PC IF IT OVERHEATS UNDER NORMAL USE.

There's a couple of Radeon R7 270x's on sale for only $119(cheap for something that good) made by sapphire. That should cover your need pretty nicely for a long time since sapphire is high in quality.

Also, if you look around for some cheap $40 PSU's on the internet, I am sure you can find a couple decent-ones. They are not always the best of quality, but will serve you enough until you save up to buy a better-quality one.
EDIT: yea, I know you might not like amd, but frankly they are not all that bad really, it was prob just cause you might need a newer mobo to keep up with the new tech coming out lately.

to be honest, idk what psu is in my pc. For all I know, it's a potato because I have NOT changed my PC's hardware configuration (aside from adding my first monitor and speakers) since it came from the factory.
1
Well, then it's most likely either a 250W or a 300W PSU. That means that you should go for GTX 750ti.
1
Get a 260x/270 if you find a good deal for it
1
GTX 660 is better than those.
OP, my suggestions:
GTX 750 Ti
GTX 660
Of course for the 660 your PSU will need to be pretty decent (~430 W or more).

750ti is better =p

$140 gets you a decent GTX 660 or a really nice 750 Ti.
But, it all depends on your power supply. What PSU do you have?
Also, several of those games can't be played on Linux. Wine is finicky, so good luck if you plan to use that.

if the budget for the gpu is 140 get a nvidia 650ti or a smiliar gtx 6xx series card
if the budget is actualy 40$ just give up... maybe you can get a realy old nvidia card or a used gtx 5xx
