Got the urge to do some late-night pixel art. Here is a pixel art cat avatar template for anyone to customize and use:

This image is 50x50 pixels, which should be suitable for an avatar (just resize it to 150x150 when you're done). If you're having issues enlarging it, be sure that you have the 'nearest neighbor' option checked as the resampling method.
I'd love to see your versions of him/her, so please post them here!

Not bad! My only suggestions would be to incorporate more colors, and maybe try some shading.
Well, since Paint.net isn't supported for Macs, I'd suggest GIMP. Its interface is a bit more complicated but it's free and will do the job.

If you want something simpler there is also a program called Paintbrush. I've never used it, but it claims to be a MS Paint equivalent and would also work.

No clue. Any regular drawing app should work fine, though. You just need the ability to draw really small (low resolution) things.
Do you know of a good pixel art program for iPad? I get to go on my ipad a lot more and have no good pixel art/painting apps
