So how does one start a server nowdays?

Question is the title, anyways what do I need to download, how plugins work, which bukkit jar is updated and I saw many new "server jars" which are similar to bukkit and basicly how does now new servers work? I am confused, I wanted to start a lan server to start preparations for upload on our new server but could not find a nice 1.8 bukkit jar which supports both new items and features and as well plugins.

Why vanilla? I want to make lets say an replica of and old survival server which I started on playing minecraft 4 years ago and its down few years now and would like to re-make it just survival, no pvp and simple rules.

I made a blog on how to make the jar. You could also just use the link I provided to the blog to download the jar file. The link is for spigot which has better optimizations than bukkit. If you want bukkit, the video/blog tutorial will also provide that. Make sure you look at the link under "Important"
