How do I make a sidebar scoreboard for a team PvP game?

Hi,
I was going to make a small team PvP game to play with my friends on Minecraft, but I'm completely new to this whole /scoreboard command thing... I don't even know if I'm posting in the right section. So excuse me if I'm not explaining things properly.
I want to make a scoreboard that displays the playerKillCount. there will be 2 teams a red team and a blue team. how would I make the teams and the scoreboard?
I really need help with this please...
I am eager to learn!

This can be easily done with the /scoreboard teams command. Then just set the scoreboard in the sidebar location.

But I do think that it is possible to do this without a plugin, it'll probably be a bit off though.
