Our server has been up for 2 1/2 years and has never been reset. We always update to the latest version of minecraft. Builds on ErrantCraft can last forever. We use towny as our main anti greif plugin but we hold many PVP events and are always doing interesting things to get players involved such as horse races and battles to conquer territory.
