Optifine Troubles

I recently downloaded optifine and everyone says optifine doubles your fps.
Once I downloaded optifine, nothing happened except it decreased my fps from 20-30 to 5-10.
I don't know what I did wrong- I'm trying to do all these things to try and decrease my fps, and optifine GUARANTEES it but just like my whitening toothpase, it didnt work.
Someone please help me.

Obviously your computer is not very high end, however Optifine has the default settings for the game set relatively high. Try making them the lowest possible and see if that changes anything

I did. Not working.

render distance, turn it down to tiny or 2 chuncks.
