Texture packs are almost certainly a virus if they come in an .exe file

Good thing the game can't read a .exe file.

All I can say is, Only little of texture pack links are viruses but, I can guarantee all texture pack links aren't viruses. If you still aren't sure, Download a virus scanner.

Only download picture files and you'll be fine except for maybe MediaFire

The texture pack will not give you viruses but honestly mediafire may give you a virus but any direct download from here is almost guaranteed safe

The game only searches for the format that it recognize, not for .exe, .jar, or anything like that.
