I allocate 1024Mb of ram to minecraft, but some allocate more. Why? Like how much does it need to run anyways?

Depends on a number of different things.

Are you hosting a server, or just playing on someones server.

Also, some people may have glitch servers.

You don't need more than 1GB (even 512MB) to run vanilla Minecraft.

Some people just want to reserve more incase it takes it. Sometimes the amount of require memory spikes for rendering. I know it does for me. I don't give it more than 2GB, but would give it more if i could to cover the potential need for more.
