Welcome to the first PlanetMinecraft Solo Build Contest!

Banner made by Sam! Map shown in the banner made by mattuFIN!

Steve's underwater adventure has come to a close. After spending a relaxing few weeks in the deep sea, he re-surfaces and boats to the nearest island.

He spots a port city in the distance - the top of skyscrapers cresting over the horizon. This beautiful city will make for a great place to rest! Steve sails into the port, ties up his boat and makes his way to the tallest hotel in the area. To his dismay, the villagers tell him there are no open rooms... well, except for the penthouse suite on the top floor. It's expensive, but Steve certainly deserves it!

Goal

Your goal is to construct the perfect penthouse suite for Steve's stay at the Villager Hotel. Using the base map provided, you will work inside the plot to build. Please be sure to read the rules below. Try to make an impression on those viewing your submission! Wow the judges with your amazing screenshotting, composition and placement skills.

We also have an interesting idea for the end of the contest - finalists be aware that we may use your builds after the conclusion of the contest! You will, of course, keep full credit for your build, and it will not be used for anything monetary, on any servers, nor will it leave PlanetMinecraft itself.

Rules

These rules may change between contests, so please be sure to read them carefully in case they are different from the previous ones! Failure to comply with these rules will result in disqualification of your submission and/or being banned from the contest.

General Rules
  • You must use the map provided.
  • Your build must be original and not an old build or plagiarized from somebody else. Originality is key!
  • You must build alone!
  • 75% or more of the screenshots must be unedited in-game shots (yes, this means no shaders, please!)
  • You must use the default texture pack. This is a build contest, not a texturing contest.
  • You must only build within the quartz/iron skeleton. You may not add or remove anything outside of that area. The stone, glass and air inside are all fair play.
  • Screenshots are very important! Please be sure to add lots of them. Unedited shots are best; photoshop/shaders does not a build make.
  • One entry per user! "Update" your submission if you need to, but do remember that once the build period has ended, you won't be allowed to edit your submission any more.
  • You may not use any tools that produce an output for you. Building aides are allowed, but don't let a program do the main work for you!
  • No mods! Must be vanilla Minecraft, 1.8.8 or below.

Q/A

Can I add floors and rooms?

Yes, so long as it is within the quartz/iron skeleton. Penthouse Suites are not often only one floor, so feel free to add stairs, separators, anything you like!
Can I move the door?
No.
Can my friend help?
No.
I made a special program to generate me the most optimal penthouse suite based on complex indexing of over seven thousand different penthouse suites. Can I use the output?
No. This is program-generated content. You didn't do the work on the project itself.
Can my friend move the door?
No.

Entering

All ready to enter? Great!

Step 1: Download the contest map, which you can find by clicking this long string of blue text. Place the map in your "saves" folder where Minecraft is located. To quickly find this folder, go to the "Resource Packs" option in Minecraft and click the "Open Folder" button. Go up a folder, and you should see your saves there. Unzip the map zip there.
Step 2: Load the map in Minecraft, and have fun! You have two weeks to build. You are in no rush to post your map, and may post it any time before the two week period.
Step 3: When you're ready to post, head back to your Minecraft saves folder and zip the map folder. Windows users can right-click and Add To > New Compressed Archive; you may also use a third party program such as WinRAR or 7zip.
Step 4: Go to the Create New Project page on PlanetMinecraft and upload your map as normal! Be sure to take many screenshots to show off the interiors.

Judging

Entries will be judged by a panel of your PlanetMinecraft peers. We'll be assembling a team of individuals to judge; don't worry if there aren't any yet, they will be added soon!

During the first phase, judges will be scouring builds, disqualifying entries that break the rules and diamonding posts that they like. Remember that judge diamonds are worth a lot! Once the build period is up, the contest will enter phase two.

The second phase consists of 5 days of review; the judges will go over the entries and find any straggling rule breakers. Users will have time to diamond and view more of the entrants.

The final phase involves the judges judging all of the finalists, which are calculated based on an aggregate score of activity and votes.

You will be judged on the following aspects, on a 1-10 inclusive scale:
  1. Concept & Originality: Fresh, new ideas and crazy concepts! Try to do something new, set yourself apart from the status quo and show us what you're made of.
  2. Technique & Execution: Color, shape, texture - be sure your build flows together and represents what you are trying to accomplish.
  3. Presentation & Experience: Presentation of a build can really help to make an impression. Be sure you've got good screenshots, spend some time on the post!
