These are the first and last songs on the album, named after the places where World War I started and ended. As you can guess, “Sarajevo” is about the assassination of the Archduke, and “Versailles” is about the Treaty of Versailles. Both songs are instrumentals, with a narrator describing the events they’re based on. In between the dialogue, there is a repeating segment of singing. For “Versailles,” there are two repeating segments, plus a reprise of the “Sarajevo” chorus. I love the way the band did this, bookending the album with two songs that have similar melodies and choruses, and ending the album on the eerie and foreshadowing questions of “Will this war really end all wars? / Can a war really end all war?”
