The Red-crowned Parakeet or Kakariki is a parakeet endemic to NZ.
Recognizable by their signature "re-he-he-he-he" and other chatter, these birds are hard to miss.
Although protected in NZ, a few hundred years ago some Kakariki were brought off New Zealand and are now in the pet trade in Europe. Something I find really strange is when I see people with yellow Kakariki as pets.
Kakariki has a double meaning here. In Te reo Maori, Kakariki can mean the colour green and for the bird it means "kaka" - parrot, and "riki"- small, or "Small Parrot".
