I don't think it is wise to simply patent a minecraft invention. This was built about one year ago by another person I knew. It was much larger at the time I believe because redstone technology wasn't so advanced then. It was built in just before the 1.8.1 update, which I think released in August 2011. There was no visible repeaters and it was much larger, and slower, but it's still no fair that you can claim that it was you which invented it. You never know.

That wouldn't work because you would have to get out of the elevator and get in another to go up or down another floor. I meant having buttons that could take you to different floors.

I don't think so, because every time you go up/down a block you would need to change the redstone wiring for the piston in the very middle, and you can't push redstone with pistons :(

not true you could have 2 blocks beside the middle one with more pistons below that and repeaters on sides might give it a try and get back to you on that.

WOW ... couldn't you do it by taking the redstone repeaters away and just letting the power go through an iron block. it would make the lift 2 blocks wider but when you are inside it it would look a lot nicer

heh, I haven't been able to make a single platform lift that functions.
What I was trying to do was make a fancier version of the simple 1x1 rotating belt elevator (the kind where a set of 4 pistons push blocks around in a cycle)
And that was just a horrible failure. I should've thought of this design instead

without the gates, pistons pushing down from above couldn't also push the floor of the compartment down. Has to be something there

Make a portcullis out of fences or iron bars that can realistically raise and lower from above - none of that ridiculous gravel so many builders use, which looks terrible and takes forever. Make it so able to be expanded to any size, but it should at least cover a 4x4 gateway.
