The ARL-44, is the last French heavy tank to ever see service, it was designed as a purpose to raise their armory post-war
It started it's design phase during 1944, however, testing the design started at 1946, and started production during 1949, it is somewhat a modern design, however, it's use of old components, such as the tracks, which are the same with the Char B1 Bis, and the 90mm guns unreliability to penetrate targets at longer ranges, proved too be unsatisfactory and retired in 1953.
It was a transitional tank, which taught engineers how to design a tank with heavy loads, it was a stepping stone to the AMX-50 prototype
