General Characteristics
History up to November 1908:
The Katori was the lead ship of her class of two pre-dreadnought battleships (also categorized as semi-dreadnought battleships) of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Unlike her sistership Kashima, she was shorter in length, lighter in displacement, and she uses Vickers-made 12-inch guns similar to the main armament of HMS Dreadnought. Her secondary armaments were also Vickers-made as oppose to the Elswick-made guns found on Kashima. She was built by Vickers at their shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness in Great Britain, laid down on 27th April 1904, launched on 4th July 1905, completed on 20th May 1906, and commissioned into service by August 1906. She was named after the Shinto Shrine in the city of Katori in Chiba Prefecture.
The Katori-class Battleships missed the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), but they greatly reinforced the fleet which at that time consist only of three operational battleships. On October 1907, Crown Prince Yoshihito (the future Emperor Taisho) boarded Katori for a tour to Korea, accompanied by the battleships Fuji, Shikishima, and Asahi. In 1908, she participated in the Fleet Maneuvers and the Imperial Naval Review as the flagship of the 2nd Fleet under Vice Admiral Baron Shigeto Dewa. The commanding officer of the ship is Captain Genzaburo Ogi from the 10th class of the Imperial Naval Academy who commanded the ship since 15th May 1908.
Since their entry into service, Katori and Kashima were the most powerful capital ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy until the battleship Satsuma came into service by March 1910.
