The castle dates from the end of the 12th century. The building sits on a granite ridge on two levels. This clearly delineates three distinct parts, namely the high castle situated on the upper ridge, the lower castle on the lower ridge, and finally the advanced works resting on the south face of the rock.
Most of the fortress was built in several construction campaigns between the late twelfth and the first third of the thirteenth century. The oldest part is the high castle (keep, seigniorial dwelling and Romanesque tower). Subsequently, the lower castle was built and the advanced structures (front yard, drawbridge, garden and corner tower).
Much later, the house was transformed so as to create a moat at the foot of the dungeon, the Romanesque tower was raised and the bastion built around the fourteenth century.
