Level 25 : Expert Architect
I am recreating the city of Chicago, Illinois in roughly 1:2 scale (56% of the original size). This project will cover all of downtown Chicago. I am recreating the city based off images and 3D models provided by Google Maps as well as the Sketchup 3D Warehouse. Data about the heights of buildings are provided by Skyscraperpage and Emporis.

I started this project in July of 2013, but around 80%+ of the progress made has been within the last year.

Please note that there are currently no interiors to any buildings. This project is focused on creating a detailed replica of the city's buildings and streets, but not interiors.

I am creating this using my personal creative Bukkit server with WorldEdit.
All renderings are made in Chunky.
A custom resource pack is included in the zip folder with the world save.

Update #4 - Download Now Available : 11/25/2016 1:42:30 pm11/25/16

I have finally uploaded the world for everyone to download. The Resource Pack for this world is included in the zip folder with the save file. Don't forget to apply it first!

Night time renders added! : 11/16/2016 1:32:18 pm11/16/16

I am very excited to now be able to post chunky renders of the city at night! I spent the last week converting all the lighting in the city, so expect more nighttime renderings in the future!

Update #2 : 09/19/2016 9:20:49 pm9/19/16

Because I'll be away at school and have much less free time on my hands, I will very rarely if ever be able to post new pictures or updates. I have not given up the project completely! I'm still making progress, just much slower than my usual pace.

Update #1 : 04/10/2016 10:47:39 am4/10/16

I recently started working on this again after about a year long break. I uploaded some pictures to show the progress.

This is absolutely amazing. Very well done, and simply amazing. You should add Wanda Vista as your next building. Cheers.
These renders are really very realistic! Did you make them?

Just tried out the build. It looks impressive. I see that you just barely squeezed this into the 256 block limit with it snipping the antennas off the Sears Tower. However, you should be able to raise the city up by 1 block as I can still place one block on top the Sears Tower antennas. By doing this, you can add a floor under the river and lake.

In this case, its too bad that the PC version of Minecraft doesn't make an bedrock boundary floor at the bottom of the world like the console versions. If your map were ported to the console versions without lifting it one block, it would appear that there is bedrock under the lake/river, rather than it leading to the void.

Anyways, I look forward to more updates. Once the 1.0.0 build of Pocket Edition/Win10 Edition releases, the build height on that will be raised to 256, and I'll be able to port this over as well.

I figured that I would start up an account on here so I could give you some feedback.

This map looks absolutely amazing. I'm from Chicago in real life, and it is amazing to see it recreated in Minecraft. I also think you made a smart decision to make it 1:2 scale. It still maintains a lot of detail, and the sky scrapers are able to fit within the world.

I have been following your progress since 2014, and I am glad to see that you have continued your work in recent months. I definitely hope that you release it soon. This is the map I have been dreaming of ever since I first played the game. If you like, I could help you build some things, and maybe even add some interiors since I know how many of the locations look on the inside. Take the Skydeck in the Sears Tower for example. I could also create the subway tunnels which run underneath the city as well.

Also one last thing that I wanted to point out. If you wanna get more feedback and recognition for your work, I recommend posting this on minecraftforum.net, and add a link to this in the topic.

Thank you so much! I'm flattered to have someone follow my work as closely as you do.
I'd be open to seeing some interiors added, but it would be a little bit tricky. Many of the individual floors are only 2 blocks high and usually fairly cramped. The train tunnels would also be difficult because most of the city is only 3 blocks above bedrock. Most of Streeterville is built at bedrock level, so there is limited if not no space at all underground. I appreciate your interest, though!

I was planning on posting this within in the next week, so come back for it soon!

In the cities I have built in the past, I like to use top half slabs for the floors. It gives you a little bit of extra room and does not feel so cramped. I use any illuminated block for the lights in the ceiling, and cover the floor with carpet.

For elevators, I typically use ladders on opposite sides of a 2 block wide elevator shaft, but in one of my sky scrapers, I made a elevator out of command blocks. It looks like you are inside an elevator, and you get teleported to different floors, so it looks realistic. I would love to do this for the Sky Deck in the Sears Tower.

I have built a Water Tower that could be of use to you, since you haven't gotten that far up Michigan yet. However, the material will need to be switched as I built it on an older patch.

I do have a John Hancock Center which I shaped from Google Earth, but I don't think it would work here. Plus, it does not have the right amount of X's on the building as it was difficult to get those right.

Regarding the underground tunnels, how high up can the map be raised without cutting off any buildings? If it isn't enough, another option is to build the subway tunnels in a different dimension. At the entrances, you use command blocks to teleport your character. If it works when you walk down that first flight of stairs to the turn style area, you can make it look like the player never actually teleported. The duplicate turn style/staircase areas would make it look seamless, even though your in another map. I suppose it would kinda look like GTA III where it has to load a little bit when you enter the subway (except here, your being teleported as well).
