I have created a command block system that adds "Advanced Furnaces" with custom smelting recipes.
The video explains the system both from a user point of view and how to add your own recipes or change the example ones - for a quick demo, just download the schematic, paste it into your spawn chunks somewhere and hit the "Install" button.
The system comes with four custom recipes that smelt iron armor into ingots (4 for chest, 3 for legs, 2 for boots and helmet).

There is now a version available that works on Minecraft 1.8.3! Sadly that involves removing the Marker tag from the armor stands used by this thing, so the bug where you couldn't place blocks on top of advanced furnaces is back, for the time being.
Hopefully Mojang will fix the bug soon, but until then at least the smelting works. Enjoy!

I'm hoping there are some decent tutorials around on how to get and use MCEdit... or maybe that's something I should be making.
Youve added a core mechanic to custom minecrafting that hopefully will catch on.
