She was planned before the 1WW to get the Blue Riband but was forgotten by the outbreak of the 1WW, After 1WW her design was improved and after the end of the hyperinflation in the Weimar republic the construction of her was started
History:
-Start of construction 1923
-Launching 1924
-Completed 1925
-Start of career 1925
-1925 Won the blue riband at Maiden voyage
-1925->1929 Normal transatlantic trips and successful years of service and 3 cruises including one world trip
-1929 Blue riband lost to Bremen and recaptured later
-1930 Blue riband lost to the Europa and was never recaptured after that
-1933->1936 Ship popular among immigrants but declining popularity on voyages back to Germany
-1936->1939 Cruises in the Caribbean due to declining popularity within Europe
-1939->1941 Ship was in Florida at the outbreak of the 2WK and continued cruises until 1940. Return to Germany was never tried as it could have meant the end of the ship. She was in Havana from 1940-1941 because further voyages were too risky
-1941 Former chairman who emigrated to the USA in 1934 has notified ships which are in America (including the Rhein) to come to New York as the allies agreed for mild reparations for the company if it would surrender ships as troopships
-1941->1947 Service as a troop transporter and after the end of WW2, many troops returned to the USA on her
-1947->1949 Ceremonial return to Germany and conversion for renewed service as Oceanliner
-1949->1961 Normal years of service, contributed a lot to the rebuilding of the shipping company but was becoming increasingly unprofitable by the end of 1959
-1961->1965 When the ship became unprofitable they wanted to preserve it somehow and therefore they used it as a cruise ship
-1965 She continued to bring too little income she was laid up in a port and put up for sale
-1965->1970 The ship was in bad condition after 3 years and was bought by someone who wanted to convert the ship into a hotel in Hamburg but after this failed the ship was put up for sale again.
-1970 The ship in poor condition was sold to a scrapping company and in 1973 the ship was completely scrapped
